I was putting on gas checks on 45-70 bullets using a Lee push thru sizer. After snapping them on the base, I pushed them thru nose first. Then I did some base first. I couldn't see any difference, but I didn't try to pry any off either. Which way do you do it?

I put 'em on nose first. I've been able to pick a few off running them through base first.

And my experience was just the opposite. I had to push the through base first or the checks would fall off. I e-mailed Lee on the advice of another site member and they sent me a nose profile die so I could seat the checks first, then size the bullets. It's an extra step, but this is a hobby..and it works, too!

never tried it base first, I find it hard to balance the round nose on the anvil.[smilie=1:

Lee will make a punch that is concave. some of their boolits will not set a check nose first . One boolit is the 338 that they have. It has to go base first. I call lee they sent a punch that matched the boolit nose. One other thing I found on the 44 and 45 checks is when you start the boolit in with gas check installed . Going nose first ,when the boolit gets tight. Stop and take the punch and --TAP- TAP- it like you are useing punch to drive the check on , the Lyman 44 429640 Devastator is one that needs that rick

You kinda gotta guide it into the die.....and watch your fingers...
