Sharps rifle-350gr. lead bullet help?

Hi All,

My pal bought a 45-70 Sharps rifle by Armi I think .I know it's not a Petressli. (SP).
The rifle shoots very well with 450gr. jacked bullets.

He bought a good quality mold 2 cavity.& used gas checks.
The bullets are pushed to about 1650 fps with 4895.
I thought that was too fast.

Can you let me know what shoots well in your rifle with a 350 gr. bullet. & what type of lub. you use.

.................Broomhandle, well it's not too fast, but it's a bit more then one would need for a restfull session of blowing the 10 ring out of a target:shock:.

Lighter much more pleasant loads for the 350gr cast boolit would be something like 12grs of Unique, 22grs SR4759 or 4227, or 28.0 grs 4198.

I just use Javalina for the lube if the slugs not paper patched. Don't need much of anything hi-tech for that.

I have been shooting a 420 gr plain base boolit ( lymans 457643) @1650 with good results and little leading . All of the 4895s IHMO are too slow burning for all but max loads and then only with heavy boolits in the 45-70 . lite loads with this slow of a burning powder in a no-no . I would be scared myself if i tried to slow the 350gr down past 1600 fps with this powder(after reading the SEE thread) I had a big scare with a lite load of AA2495 and a 315gr boolit .
Ive got a lyman 457122 which , either came from the factory with out the hollow-point pin , or is a mismarked 457192 , that casts at 350 grs. i havn't done anything with this boolit yet. when i do deside to work with it im going to use Unique, Reloader 7 and IMR 4198 .

J-Word boolets in a Sharps :groner: Blasphemy!

Whatcha need is a pound of Goex Cartridge. Start at 65gr by weight with a card or fiber wad and all will work correctly. Use Bulshops BP lube for the boolits and a Federal 215 to start it off. Recoil will be very comfortable and you will have a blast.
