I've got an old Lyman single cavity, 358156 hp. What types of lead are ya'll using in them. It's gas checked of course. I just wondered about velocities and so forth. Thanks

I've killed two deer with this bullet, hollow point, I mixed 2/3 WW & 1/3 pure lead.
The first deer heart shot jumped in the air went 20 ft. and folded.
The second deer went straight down from a neck shot. Both under 60 yards.

What cartridge and was it a revolver or rifle?

there is another thread about this bullet was up just a couple days ago.
one of my favorites because it feeds well in my old Rossi 92 loaded in 357 mag brass, I cast of clip on wheel weights with a bit of tin added and lube size at .360 with carnauba red load at close to max book loads for jacketed 158 grain bullets with h110 and 2400. most recently ive been loading with 17.8 grains Alliant 300mp, very accurate in the carbine as well as in six shooter

If you're just shooting them COWW + 2% tin will cast well and will give excellent performance [assuming GC'd, properly lubed and sized correctly].

If wanting maximum terminal performance the best thing about a GC bullet is the softer more malleable alloy that can be used at higher velocities.

For 38 SPL velocities [800 - 1000 fps] I suggest 40-1 or 30-1 alloy.

For mid range revolver 357 velocities [1000 - 1200 fps] I suggest a 20-1 alloy.

For full power 357 Magnum velocities [1200 - 1500 fps] I suggest a 16-1 alloy.

Those velocities also apply in rifles.

For velocities of 1550 - 2000 fps I suggest a ternary alloy of COWW + 2% tin [95/2.5/2.5].

The 358156 is an excellent bullet, I've been using it since '70.
