1,000 grungy 9mm brass cases arrived today:

So I decided to experiment and bought one of these:

Turns out each drum holds about 200x 9mm cases, so I added hot water, a dash of Dawn dish-detergent and a pinch of Lemi-Shine into each drum (no pins). I ran the gadget for an hour to get a baseline, et voila:

If you add pins, the insides will come out just as clean.

You may want to get a line on a spare drive belt. Check the unit but I think there was one of the rock tumbler units that was known for having a poor belt so you wanted to have a replacement on hand. Also the replacement was better quality.

Looks good the insides too.

It came with a few spare belts - as for pins, the juice isn't worth the squeeze; I want cases decently clean but I don't need them to look brand-new.

I have been using one of these for about 8 years. I use pins and am careful not to overload it and have not had any belt problems, though I have a spare. Hope yours works as well as mine has.

When I started years ago, I used just boiling water with a few flakes of laundry detergent added. Rinse in hot water to help dry.

Since I had room, didn't take long for the wife to not wanting me doing reloading and case cleaning in the house. Exspecially cleaning black powder in the sink.

Sorry but I love my shiny brass. Have been wet tumbling with SS pins for about two years. Squirt of Dawn, half tablespoon of Lemishine and two capfulls of Armorall wash and wax. With as hot as I can water out of the tap. Then I keep them in Folgers plastic coffee cans (their plastic now[emoji1787]) sorta air proof. https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20210303/bcfe97d590e121f8c9b4d20200ce6e70.jpghttps://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20210303/5581285ef8fe8c4af981f0a64fb6efb5.jpghttps://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20210303/9a30ce527dd3ddefabc35556698a4fb2.jpg

After you get the pins, you'll ask yourself why you waited.

Left pile before pins, right pile after, the three cases in the middle are the opposite.

I made a tumbler jar out of a 3" gray PVC Pipe. Found the rubber drums resulted in nasty black water after tumbling.

I'm glad you had good results but $60 for china junk is cheap?

Cheaper than the ammo or reloading company's expensive Chinese junk, produced in the next town over, sold with their logo glued to the tumbler.

I have the same one and got extra belts with it. Had it for a long time now and haven't used it since moving out here four years ago. I do use pins and grabbed one of those releasing magnets for the pins. Not sure if they let you use the coupons anymore on Chicago equipment.

I wish I had a coupon (Ron White - "a coupin!") but it was payday, so what the heck :)

O.M.G!! You actually was able to wet tumble some brass without a special, hi-tech wet tumbler and just use water, soap and citric acid for less than $$$$? [smilie=1:

Nearly 35 years ago I got one of the HF tumblers in the pic, and used it quite a bit until I "improved" it. Got another one that has been trouble for many years. When I experimented with wet tumbling this is what I used. For my normal dry tumbling (corn cob blast media 14-20) I have made some larger drums that will hold several hundred 9mm cases and a few boxes of 45 ACP (I haven't counted them). I have made drums from 6" PVC, 5 lb. protein powder jars, and various plastic, screw on lid jars. Haven't needed to repair my HF dual drum rotary in the hundreds (thousands?) of hours of operation...

That's good to hear :)

I know, right? [smilie=l:

I just did an experiment and ran some .45acp brass (about 70 cases fit in each drum) for 30 minutes instead of an hour - brass isn't as shiny-clean as running an hour but totally useable:

I quit using pins for most of my cleaning. Makes things much easier

Years ago a commercial caster and reloader explained that my factory new brass was sticking badly in my expander dies because it was so squeaky clean inside the case mouth. The soot in a fired case acts as a lubricant making expanding and case mouth flaring much easier and smoother.

At least in my pistol brass and my dies, I find that pin cleaned brass acts the same as new, so I skip the pins. Easier going through the press, and the "dirty" case and primer pocket interiors don't seem to matter in my loads.

I’ve been using the same tumbler with hot water, Lemishine, and little football shaped SS beads. I typically do one drum at a time to be easier on the motor and belt. I also have SS chips that I plan on trying soon.

TyGuy let us know how the chips work. Are they from Southern Shine Media?

This China junk (for me anyway) has cleaned over 20K brass over last 4 years! Just have to be careful not to overload.

Yes they are but I ordered indirectly through T&B Bullets. They showed up yesterday. I’m planning to run a batch or two this weekend. I’ll post some results.

I’m particularly interested to see how they do with spent .22lr for swaging. The elliptical burnishing beads I’m currently using work fairly well but primer pockets and inner corners are always still grubby. They also tend to get stuck sideways in the bottoms of 9mm/38spl/357mag and .223s. I’m also curious if they’ll tear up the inside to the tumbler’s drums.

I have a F.A.R.T & HF double tumbler. I use the fart on brass, the HF for PC tumbling, jewelry cleaning & rock tumbling. I have found tumbling works on many things like rusted or dirty tools, cleaning copper & brass plumbing fittings. I wanted a larger capacity tumbler with a bigger opening and easily replaceable drum. I built one based on a few video's like this using a wiper motor. https://youtu.be/_0A4bBK8siA I had just about everything I needed. I sourced the wiper motor from a mechanic friend for free, the threads were metric so I had to buy a metric extension nut, bolt & nut. I had the scrap steel for the frame, the wheels for rollers, the 3 position switch & I used a battery charger for power until I found an 18V laptop power cord. I first used a 5gal bucket but found it too big. I then got a 2.5gal chlorine bucket my buddy had from his pool chemicals. I build it in about an hour. The fins/agitator was ripped down scrap Trex decking my neighbor had, a little silicone on the edge & a few screws through the outside into the Trex paddles on the inside. I built this tumbler for under $15. It was so easy to build I just gave it to a friend next door who just got into reloading. I'll add pics of it as a 2.5gal later. I will build another one as well.

Check the unit but I think there was one of the rock tumbler units that was known for having a poor belt so you wanted to have a replacement on hand. Also the replacement was better quality.

I started SS pin tumbling with a HF Dual Drum like one in picture. I must have got one with bad belt syndrome. Was mindful about not overloading the the drums. I checked pulley alignment a 1/2 dozen times. After going through the spares that came with unit I bought some replacement HF belts. No better life and pretty pricey IMO. tried finding an O ring that would fit but couldn’t. I had a pack of vacuum cleaner drive belts, sliced them down to 1/8” wide, they lasted longer. I briefly considered rebuilding it with real bearings. Still have the unit but switched to using a FA.

I’ve been wondering how one of those tumblers would work for making Black Powder. Would they be big enough to be practical?

I use the chips in my RCBS sidewinder. Only draw back is they are finer and some tend to escape containment and play havoc with the garbage disposal. I need to get a media separator. Lol

They really clean the primer pockets but I only use them every third time or when I'm cleaning scrounged up range pickups. I like new looking brass too so I clean mine like I clean my guns.
