I've a 6" M57 that I would like to deer and hog hunt with at ranges less than 100 yrds. What are your opinions as to the best mold/moulds for this application? The only mold that I have for it at this time is the Saeco 410 which drops a plain based flat point bullet at 232gr from ww's.

a good flat nose at 1300 or so is usually plenty in anything.
if you only get 1100 they will be just as dead, just hit them where the boolit goes.

The Saeco 410 should do just fine on deer. Work up a good accurate load, and then put that flat-point through the boiler room and you'll have venison in short order.

My own personal favorite for the .41 Magnum and deer is the 410459 HP, but these HP moulds are very hard to find. The deer I have shot with it have gone less than 20 yards.

What would you think about having the 410 "hollowpointed" by one of the more esteemed members of this board?

Thanks,

Greetings and MERRY CHRISTMAS !
I shoot 41īs.. Have all revolvers. For BIG hogs I would go with any SWC 240+ grains 1200 fps+ and your Saeco will do it. For deer any 220 + will go clean through at 1200fps. You do not need hollow points. Start with 50/50 WW and lead. If that is to soft just add more WW. But I shoot as soft as possible and have no need for HP in my groundhog + bigger critter loads.
But I also just drill HP if I want one. Make yourself a metal jig out of aluminum or brass (oak will work for a while) and an 1/8 drill bit. Once you have your jig any boolit becomes a HP.
I do not use my M57 for HEAVY Thumper loads. Those exit my Rugers or my real preference a Dan wesson with 8 inch barrel. This was my "steel gun" and it shoots 41 loads I would NOT put through my Smith. The model 29 frame is well built BUT will not take the punishment the Rugers and Dan Wesson will hold up to. But the Dan also is another 25% heavier barrel length = and Rugers were built to shoot hard.

Above posts say it all. A flat point will totally penetrate a deer and a slug thats almost 1/2' in dia. doesn't need to expand. Just hit em good and you'll be fryin up some backstraps.

I HAVE A LBT STYLE 255GC MTN MOLD THAT SHOOTS VERY WELL IN MY BISLEY HUNTER.IT SHOOTS 3 INCH GROUPS AT 75 YARDS.IT DOES SLIGHTLY BETTER WITH 220 SAECO SWC'S.I PUT 72 FIRELAPP ROUNDS THROUGH IT AND IT SHOOTS WELL WITH ANYTHING.i'VE GONE TO USING MTN MOLDS MOSTLY NOW.i GET A GLOVE FIT TO THE CHAMBER AND WITH A SMOOTH BARREL EVERYTHING WORKS SO FAR.YOU WILL PROBABLY GET GOOD PENATRATION WITH ANY CAST BOOLIT 220 GRAINS AND HIGHER.

Thanks for the reassurance. I wasn't sure that the Saeco was appropriate or not. I'm a Newb.

I have a Lyman 410459 that we'd enlarged to .413" and hollowpointed. Does well in my Ruger Blackhawk sized to .412". Can't beat a Keith design./beagle

Beagle -- Sorry to "rain on your parade", but the 410459 is not a Keith design. Lyman came out with this bullet in a hurry in response to Remington and S&W unveiling the .41 Magnum in 1964, and Lyman called it a "Keith" but Elmer had nothing to do with designing it, and he got upset that they were putting his name on it.

The meplat is actually smaller than the 358429 that he designed back in the late 20s, and the driving bands are all different widths, and the grease groove is radiused -- all things that ol' Elmer didn't care for. Go through his Gun Notes columns on the .41 Magnum and you can find a number of thinly-veiled comments about his thoughts on the 410459. He grudgingly admitted that it was an accurate bullet (it is), but it just wasn't "right". This led him to go to H&G and design the #258, which is a true Keith SWC (3 equal width driving bands, beveled crimp groove, flat-bottomed grease groove, ~70% meplat, etc.).

All that aside, I can't agree with you more -- the 410459 HP is a dandy bullet for hunting deer.

I've shooting .41s since the mid '70s when I had a 4" M28 converted. I have used several M57s of 4 and 6" persuasion. Currently I use a Ruger Bisley with 7 1/2" barel. Over the years I've dropped several deer with Lee's 195 ge SWC, The Lymand GC SWC and now the RCBS SWC (my favorite for the Ruger). All work as well as any cast SWC is going to work. Velocities have been from 1200 to 1400 fps.

I shoot the NEI version in my 41, and will in my newly aquired 41. It casts .412 and drops 230 grains with 50/50 pure and ww with a spot of tin added. The meplat on this boolit is bigger than the 429421, at least the version I have, and shoots nice, the three drive bands are all equal and has a square grease groove. I bought this mould when Walt was still alive and is a great piece of work, my understanding is that their (NEI's) quality has went downhill. If you are looking for a Keith style and they still have this cherry, it might be worth a try.

This might be of some interest to you. This is just range work and I haven't had opportunity for field work.
