What the heck is swagging? Why do you do it? What's it for? Whats this I hear of making jackets out of .22LR shells? I must say this sounds very interesting. I'm knowlegeable in bullet casting, sizing etc.. But i've never heard of swagging until joining this forum. Can anyone enlighten me? :D

Swaging is the process all of the major producers use to make "bullets", a soft lead core is put in a copper, or gilding metal cup, set in a machine and the press forces the copper to conform to the internal design of the die.

A jacket isn't required, you can swage lead into boolits without using a jacket. That is how the Speer non-jacketed handgun boolits are made.
I might mention that the equipment to make jackets and jacketed bullets from fired .22 rimfire cases is pretty pricey. Mine is 25 years old, but recently I checked to see what it sells for now, and it was over $800.

Sure does look like fun though! Shame is so expensive. Thanks for the info!

One of the neatest things about swaging bullets is the ability to adjust weight. If I want to make 185 grain SWCs or 205 grainers (or 206, 211, 222), I use the same die.

.............Swaging is simply 'cold forming'. You cause the metal to flow into the shape of the die like plastic, via the application of pressure.
