That was my question - if so the OP must be a professional engraver! That is awesome

Yes I am the engraver. I've always had a passion for beautiful firearms but no money for them. So I bought the book and self taught me how to engrave. I wouldnt call myself a professional. Just passionate

At work I tell my guys after a certain point we are no longer simple maintainers, we are artisans. When we fix the aircraft and put it back back together, it should like better and work better than the day it was brand new.

I'm not one to go looking at engraved guns. I'm a cheap bastrich, and have never been able to afford to buy one. I've been somewhat idly interested in learning how to engrave, collected some odd bits and pieces, and plans to make an engraving vise from a bowling ball, but never got any farther than that. I have too many other projects on the back burner right now to add another one, but that thing is just gorgeous, and I may have to change my mind a bit one of these days. It's YOUR FAULT! ;)

Thank you sir. You are very kind. The blame for this belongs to the MASTERS, Meeks, whos work and littiature I have studied, Prudhome, Angilo Bee, just to name a few. They are the High ground of professionals.

As a machinist/toolmaker I can hold my own. I have zero artistic abilities. I can't even draw a good stick man.................... I have great respect for those that have this ability.

I will find them asap. There are two books. No videos. The book I would most recomend would be THE ART OF ENGRAVING, A book of instructions, by James B Meek. Mr Meek keeps everything where even a back woods hick like me can understand. A man who truely loves the art enough to share his know how. There is no book that can replace , ounce you learn how to sharpen you graver knives, just sitting down with your graver and hammer and just start cutting, cutting, cutting, and cut some more on scrap metal.

The difference is I can teach just about anyone to be a good machinist. In a thousand years you could not teach me to a an artist.

I'm a technician, not an artist. I'm a great photographer, if you need technical photos. Artistic photos? Nope, not me. Various forms of metalwork? Not exactly a ham-handed butcher, but not really a craftsman, even. Getting better, though. Woodwork? HHB, definitely. Or rough carpenter. Very rough. I can do a reasonably good stick figure. For certain values of good, anyway. It sufficed when I was drawing for elementary school students, anyway. Actually draw a picture? Nope. In a family of artists of various sorts, I am the only one who cannot sculpt, paint, sketch, or draw. I can play a tape recorder, and that's about the limits of my musical ability, too. If I have an artistic bone in my body, it's too small to see. I do OK making and fixing stuff, though. And I'm not gonna give up until they nail the box shut. Fortunately, I'm surrounded by artists, so I get to see good art every day.

How could you forget you’re engraving a revolver?

When I made the post I used the# caracter for the word number. My engraving projects are numerous and hard to keep up with. That being said, I am getting to the age where ..........I forget

I am no expert in judging engraving work but those look very nice. Is that revolver your most elaborate attempt so far.

This is a great thread in the making.

I would have to look back into my files but that is about the extent as far as coverage. Don't like to risk getting to gaudy.

Beautiful work. Spent too many years working with my hands. And my hands suffered for it. But I appreciate fine work. And that is some fine work. I'm one of those guys who couldn't cut a straight saw cut unless I'm using a guide. Even when playing with my lathe have to use two hands when setting the dials. Frank

I've been interested in learning to engrave for several years now, decided to get serious about it this year an put together a homemade airgraver, ordered some blank gravers and templates to shape and sharpen them from Lindsey, been practicing a little each day but there is a huge learning curve and I am a pretty good artist when it comes to drawing and painting. One friend had recommended the book Engraving Historic Firearms
by John Schippers he said it was the bible for engraving as far as he was concerned. Have you read it by chance? Its not cheap so wondered if it was worth getting it. I've been watching a lot of YouTube videos on the subject.

No I havent. The videos are mezmerizing to watch, but NOTHING can take the place of actually cutting metal and teaching yourself what works and what dose'nt. A gifted artist has half the battle won.

Very nice ! Not hat I’m asking to do it, but have you done engraving for pay?

Also not know anything at all about doing it, but what happens if you make a mistake? Is that like game over or do you have options?

Most everything I do is for sale. I have some firearms given to me by my father that I have engraved that will be handed down to familey when I am gone. Yes I do engraving for people who want something different. The layout of the piece is the most critical part. You have to be sure its the design you want because once you cut the metal out its a buggar to put back in. When you do make a mistake , depending on how bad, I can usually redesign around the error and for the most part hide it in redesign.
