I just posted under another thread about finding Dacron filler. I've since found it in my wifes' sewing bag! I noticed the most popular powder seems to be 4895. Is this IMR or H4895? Thanks in advance. Chris

I haven't found much difference accuracy wise between IMR and H 4895 but lile
H 4895 better because it meters better through my powder measure.

Difference is H4895 is smaller grained, throws slightly more consistently and gets more into a smaller volume case. It also is an "extreme" powder and is less sensitive to variations in ambient temperature. As far as accuracy there isn't much difference between them. The IMR is a tudge slower burning lot to lot which can be benificial under some circumstance. Milsurp on the other hand can be considerably slower and more like 4064 in burning rate. All of it is good powder and my preference for medium heavy to heavy weight cast bullets in rifle cartridges with case capacity from the 30-30 up throught the 375 H&H.

I use a lot of H4895 and milsurp 4895 (most U.S. pulldown milsurp is non canister IMR4895) and some IMR4895. I buy the H4895 and milsurp 4895 in at least 8 lb jugs.

I think you will find that soon, if not already, the IMR will drop now that Hodgdon control both brands and source from ADI. Already done it to H4227.

Jeff is probably correct. I noticed some "new" IMR4895 the other day in SPORTCO. It was in a Hodgdon round plastic containor with a different looking label so I assumed it was the new Hodgdon brand. I didn't buy any so I don't know what the powder loked like inside.

A stepped phase-out of a number of the IMR powders is indeed in progress. Hodgdon is moving relatively slowly on this, but fairly soon, there will be no more IMR-4895 (H4895 will replace), possibly no more IMR-4064 (as of now, they are not certain of a replacement, so this is why it is only possible, for now)... IMR-3031, 4227, etc. The issue slowing this process is the existence of a close replacement (for each) already within the Hodgdon line (they do not yet have viable replacements for all of the powders to be eventually discontinued). IMR-4064 is my "staple" powder at this point, so I am concerned about this one most of all, but they tell me that 4064 MAY still be manufactured (as is) through 2010.

Whatever they do in the end, it SHOULD be a matter of simply adjusting loads somewhat for the "new" powders. Of course, it ain't always that easy.
