I am going through my die sets and came across my notes for my 44 spl die set that I was still missing the shell guide. I'm curious as to if anyone can tell me the size theirs mics out to for 44 spl so that I can lather turn one when we get a bit warmer weather.

Seems like I'll also need to make one for 30 carbine as well but that is one I don't see myself using the tong tool for anytime soon but if you have dimensions I'll gladly use them.

I'm wondering if I can just add .010" or so to the case dimension and call it good. not like its sizing the case, it should just be guiding it into the die....

Just so it’s big enough to allow a belled case mouth to pass through. Don’t ask me how I learned this tidbit. [smilie=b:

The 44 shell guide is a #4 with an inner diameter of .464".

No idea on the 30 carbine?

The correct 310 adapter for .44 (Russian and Special, and later .44 Magnum) is No.9. Adapter No.4 is for .22 Hornet. The correct adapter for .30 M1 Carbine is No.15.

The above information is taken from a chart in Lyman/Ideal Handbook No.39 (1953).

If you are making your own adapter, then a diameter of 0.007" to 0.010" over case head diameter should allow sufficient clearance.

Interesting, the #5 is what is with my 44 SPL 310 dies......

Question for OP; by "shell guide" are you referring the part that fits in the 310 handles?

Yes the threaded ring of sorts with the set screw

That same handbook shows the No.5 for .30-40 Krag and .303 British. It would seem that eventually someone at Lyman figured out that .30-40 Krag, .303 British, and .44 Russian / Special / Magnum cases share a similar head diameter and that the same adapter would work for all of them.
