[B]So tell me guys what is your bullet alloy and how is your accuracy with it?

I under stand that most guys are using 1 in 20 or 1 in 30..I am thinking of going 1 in 40 and wonder if this will cause any leading effect compared to the 1 in 20 alloy....

Caliber is 45-70 and the bullet is Lymans 457125.the round nose...Which so far seems to be the one my Pedersoli seems to like so far....

Has anyone on here tried the 1 in 40 and gone back to 1 in 30 or 20? If so could you explain why you made the change...Thank you....John

I shoot 30-1 in both my 38-55 Highwall and my Trapdoor carbine without any leading issues. In the 38-55, I'm shooting a 272-grainer from an old Ohaus mould and, in the 45-70, a Lyman 457124 (407 gr). I pan-lube both with homemade Emmert's and shoot both "as-cast" over .030" card wads and moderately compressed charges of FFg.

Good morning
In my custom barrel Roller (Baushky) 1-18 it is a very uniform .458 woth a lonng lead (my want) and I shoot ANY mix as a .459 boolit only has to spin..
My .462+ 1884 trapdoor Needs a very soft .464 lead pill as the bore is iregular, some pitting, here I use about a 1-40- mix The least amount of tin... (I am thrifty) to get the boolit to cast.
The more I play with barrels the more I am convinced the BORE is the determinant factor to what mix CAN shoot the best... FPS also. Yea I know that is really basic. Danny Powel got me started in this BIG BLACK Boring shooting and made that statement to me when I asked the same Q many years ago....

If the gun is new, all bets are off. If you've fired the rifle with smokeless and, then, cleaned it vigorously with brushes and solvents, then all bets are off.

However, if the barrel is broken in (smooth) and seasoned (natural lubes and BP) and has been gently cleaned for a period of time, then I'd say any of the alloys from 1/20 to 1/40 should work fine with no cleaning issues afterwards.

I shoot 1/30 bore rider (Mathews and Jones) boolits and get minute of gong as far as we can see, or care to travel to set up. More important than alloy, IMHO, is the consistency (and gradual nature) of ignition. I suspect the over powder wad becomes more important with softer alloys, but don't really know that to be the case.

I find the mould fills out well with 30/1.

Ran into him at the Wabash Valley Gun Collector's Ass'n show last fall. Guess he's moved back to Danville permanently.

I appreciate all your replies....My reason for asking is that I am thinking of buying all my bullets from Buffalo Arms and not bother with the casting any more........Just Thinking I said.....Have a nice holiday..
