Howdy all,
Would someone happen to have some dimensions for an original Colt SAA presentation box? Also what the original wood may have been? I'm thinking Gen 1, the revolver in question is a 41 Colt 5 1/2" barrel.
My son would like to make one in shop class for his mother.
Something similar to the photo I included below.https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20210211/068de4c8331b3feb439365a3447f79e0.jpg

The cases shown in my Colt book are sized and compartmented to fit the revolver plus what ever accessories were with it. Sometimes there was a compartment for a box of ammunition or a wood block to hold some cartridges. All appeared to be felt lined. As near as I can tell the American made cases were generally made of mahogany but a few were probably made of oak. The cases for the guns made and sold in England were described as being made of oak. None of the early cases shown were French fitted.

Hope this helps.

If it were me making it, for a Colt, I would use either black walnut or one of the oaks (red or white) and custom fit the partitions, the line it with either velvet or felt.

Make sure you have more than one key for the lock. Don't ask how I know that.

Nice black walnut can be hard to find depending on where you are. So I might lean to the oak.

Off topic I was just reminded I was supposed to swing through Butler when I ran to Rich Hill today.

Very different gun, and company, but I have the wooden box my S&W Model 3 (2000) came in if you want any details.

I'd use oak, velvet lined, and look at various pictures of them.

Then scale or proportion your plans to fit the revolver you have.
