I have a 1868 Springfield ( LG&Y lock plate ) trapdoor I recently purchased. I doesn't have a firing pin. The standard early 1873 type pin doesn't fit. Sticks with about 1/2" of the pin sticking out. Any suggestions on how to get this to fit or is this not the correct firing pin for this rifle.

See if there is a rusted and broken spring in the bottom of the breech block. I think the 68 and 1870 used the spring, and the 73 got rid of the spring when they redesigned the breach block in 1878. The old style pin you need will be machined down for a small spring, and the new style will taper down to the point. I found one for my 1870 from Dixie Gun Works , not sure how many parts they have anymore.
