I have a stainless 308 Marlin that has a scope mounted on it. I’m removing the scope and mount so I will need the plug screws to replace the mount screws. Does anyone have any idea what size these little guys are and where I can get them? I have looked at Brownells and Midway with no luck. If I know the size I may be able to find them somewhere else. I went to the local gunsmith ( new guy in my area) I ask him about them, he looked at me like I asked for directions to the space station or something. After about 3 minutes of the confused look and trying to figure it out, I said never mind and left. So here I am. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thank you.

My local Ace Hardware has a selection on gun screws. Try local.

You could take the screws in with you for whomever to measure, and measure depth with the pokey end of your calipers.

When I need small parts like that, my local fastenal works with me. The girls have even opened a ctn and sold me 1 or 2 as needed. And don't forget, your removing the mounts. The screws should be shorter. I've had people forget and tighten them in there and mess the top of the bolt up.

6-48 or 8-40 from Midway or Brownells not a standard thread for a hardware store.

I don’t know about the later SS Marlins chambered in the express cartridges but all of the Marlin lever actions I own have 6 x 48 screws and factory drilled and tapped for that size.

I have seen, at well established gunshops mounting scopes, containers containing the screws removed from rifles receiving scope mounts. May be able to find a "free" one if you have such a shop in your area and go through there screw jar.

they should be 8-40. the holes in side of receiver, if its drilled and tapped for a fool proof sight or Lyman 66 will be 6-48.
