I just got 350 lbs of "lead" in 5lb ingots. I noticed when I looked at a few of them they had a nice ring to them when banged into each other. Too hard to dent with a thumbnail. When I got home I noticed one partial ingot that looks to have been machined. I don't know how hard of an alloy it takes to hold machine marks but this stuff does. I'm now wondering if what I have is actually lead! Feels like lead, looks like lead but it's awfully hard maybe linotype?

Never mind. Found a neat video on using art pencils to get an idea of hardness. From that method, it appears to be close to linotype. Looks good to use as is. Nice score for a flea market.

Testing the hardness would get you headed in the right direction. Look up using pencils if you don't have a Lee tester.
