Until recently RCBS made 2 44 caliber 240 grain gas checked SWC bullet molds.
One was just a regular SWC and the other was a billed as a silhouette SWC.
My question is other than appearances, what were the big differences in the two bullets ?
Was the silhouette bullet supposed to be more accurate or what ?
TIA, Dennis

I believe the RCBS 44-240sil was a truncated nose design that did not have a forward driving band like a SWC. Since it is more "streamlined" in shape, it has a better ballistic co-efficient and therefore SHOULD be more accurate at longer ranges. However, I doubt that most handgun shooters can detect the supposed benefit based on the distances usually shot.

The RCBS 44-240-swc gc is the most accurate slug Ive tried in any of my guns.

My first bullet mould was the RCBS 240 SWC GC bullet, forty years age. Only downside, is that it casts small than I would like for my carbine.

I know of one shooter that competed with the RCBS 240 Silhouette, and won matches against jacketed shooters. He ran the Los Angeles Silhouette range, for a while.

He was known here as CBrick.

He really liked having the front drive band inside the throats of his revolvers. Said he had achieved that in most of his guns.

RCBS molds are things of beauty! Tim

In a time of companies always striving to cheapen their products to build their profits, RCBS still builds top notch products. Their molds are no different.

I use two main boolits in my .44's a MP 429421 clone and a MP 429244GC clone. since these are both Mihec Moulds they both came with 3 different HP pins and will also drop solids, that gives me 4 boolit choices for each one. The second one 429244 is a gas check boolit so it gets used for magnum loads for my SBH and Marlin rifle.

The RCBS moulds you are talking about are very similar to these other boolits that I use. In fact there is so little difference in performance it is not worth talking about. However there is a big difference in the moulds themselves. The Mihec moulds are Brass with interchangeable HP Pins,,, and with mine the very first pours made perfect boolits. The RCBS moulds also produce perfect boolits however they need to be heat cycled several times before they start producing really good ones. they also don't have the different HP pins which adds greatly to the versatility of the mould. Price is nearly the same.

A little off topic, but what diameter do most RCBS 44 molds drop at? I have fooled with 3 or 4 and they all seem to turn out .430" bullets when casting with COWW.

My RCBS 44-245-SWC drops .431 from ww+sn.

The only thin wrong with RCBS molds is the 2 cavity limit.
