Hey guys any one take the time to make there own shooting bag. I made one and its ok. Making another one now and its real nice. They are real expensive to buy a nice beaver tail one. Trying to post pics but having trouble importing them. I like to make every thing i can like the old timers did. Any one make one and can post pics on your set up?

I've made a few. Turned out ok I guess for not being a leather worker. Coolest one i made is a 2 pouch kinda deal. Has a divider in the middle on the inside. Viewed from the outside at the bottom it looks like 2 separate pouches. Its lined on the inside with pillow ticking material. Its one I use with the BP shotgun. Separate pouches are nice for keeping the shotgun kit separated. Made another for BP rifle, not as fancy, but the Mrs used an inkle loom and weaved a nice homemade strap for it. Not able to get pics right now, maybe later I can try and get a few up. Always enjoy tinkering with making anything for the BP stuff.

Im with you on making stuff. Mine has the beaver tail flap with a pocket behind it and the main pouch has a pocket in it and the back has a big pocket with a back flap covering it. im waiting for the rest of the parts and pieces to finish it. Was supposed to come in the mail today but didnt. Im going to try to post pics tomorrow been having problems might be my web browser not sure. This black powder stuff is a lot of fun. It worked 200 years ago and still works, Imagine that.

You have to reduce the size to upload pics here. Like about the size for e mail pics I think no more then 2mb.

lead chucker,

Many years ago I saw the big $ for leather possibles bags. One Saturday, I was walking past a church holding a rural town yard sale on my way to Seminary class. I saw a mint condition brown purse for 50 cents that was a mirror image of an $80 possibles bag in my local gun shop. After class as I walked past the church, I saw a black all-leather purse for another 50 cents which I bought.

Leather purses are often available at yard sales. I now have 15 for a $10 outlay. Go visit some yard sales. I have a possibles bag for each of my several muzzleloaders, both cap and flint.

My wife had this hippy girl purse from the early '70s. It was tan leather with the frills and Indian style bead decorations, etc. Well it went out of style with bell bottoms and peace signs and ended up in the back of the closet. Decades later she was cleaning things out, (to make room for more stuff no doubt!), when she came upon it once again. With fashions changed so much as to make something like that look dorky, it was headed to the trash heap. That was, until I saw it! It made the best possible bag ever!

.

No special setup - I just use the tools I've had for decades (razor knife, leather awl, large sewing needles, etc) and a few suplies for each bag (various leathers, waxed linen thread, a leather coat button, stag/antler.

When I want another bag (I now have several different types/sizes), I draw out the bag parts on an opened brown paper bag, then cut the pieces out to first dry fit (to see if I need to make any changes), and for leather-cutting templates.

I've also repurposed women's leather purses and weatherized (waterproof lining) canvas bags.
