..............This is a copy of an old "Christie" aperture rear sight:

I added the piece of ruler for a scale.

Closer view of the Peep assembly. You can see that by loosening the aperture and re-tightening the aperture is how you control the windage.

.............I didn't post any dimensions or thread pitches, as your firearm will determine most of that. The elevation/windage arm could start out as a slice from a suitable piece of angle iron.

A round action would prove to be a bit more of a problem. However a round action could be accommodated by soldering/welding a pair of horizontal bars, maybe 1/8" x 1/8" on the inside flat of the base to span the radius.

Eminently useable, especially for a one load rifle.

Nice work. Should hold up well and we usually aren't adjusting sights in the hunting fields.

A round action is not much harder to deal with using a boring head or cheap fly cutter to cut the radius into the base. Center the spindle over the side of the vise, move over the radius you need, extend the cutter back to the vise. Should be close enough but tweak as needed. I've made several Redfield style and RPA style bases for target rifles that needed a custom height. If I can do it...

I'm very impressed...jealous too.

I'm 'that guy' who never learned to run a lathe! I regret that too.

If I was trying to fabricate a sight base for a round action I think I might dig through my pile of pipe scrap first, maybe find something close to the radius.

 great job , it would be so satisfying to have the skill and tools to build something like your sight.

Glad to see that you are continuing to do machinist work!
Very nice work, small parts are a challenge for me since my lathe is a 14x40, but collets help to hold the small parts that I do.

I don't see any pictures! I want to make a simple aperture tang sight for a H&R trapdoor carbine put together I have.

.............So far as photos go, I have my online pics hosted at Fototime.com Apparently they've had some kind of issue (I heard something about a fire). Hopefully they'll get it corrected (I Hope).
