Morning,

I been watching for gas check materiel other then amerisoft alum rolls.. finally found one that I really like.

Shim in a can!!! from MachineShop discount supply..

here is the Link https://www.msdiscounttool.com/catalog/product_info.php?products_id=105470

I selected the .012 Shim in a can brass material 6" x 100" roll for 37.55.

I am very pleased.. it runs great in my freechek and my PatMarlin check maker nicely. they also carry the .015 or just about any other size you want.. Good product, good communication, good shipping, good deal!!!

give it a shot.

Marko:

Are you using the shim stock as is or annealing it? I would have figured it would be a bit springy as is and might not stay on the GC shank. Either way, that's a good idea! I hadn't thought about brass shim stock.

Currently I am using old gutter material which is a bit thick at about 0.019" but being soft it just extrudes a bit in my Ed Smith version gas check makers for .30 cal. and .44 cal. I'd have to try a couple of thicknesses of brass because I'm betting it won't extrude as easily as soft aluminum... I think about 0.014" is what is mentioned as "standard" thickness but that may vary some depending on check maker and GC shank size.

I may see if I can pick up some brass shim stock locally and give that a try.

LB, I am not annealing it. so far, it is hanging on.. havent found one on the range yet. butttttt, I have yet to find a boolit from a deer either.. accuracy is nice...

Always good to find other resources. I have rolls and rolls of Amerimax in various thicknesses, annealing makes them form better, and I don't shoot that much gas checked lately. I probably have a lifetime supply. I may have to order the 'shim in a can' stuff just because. In the meanwhile, I am mostly shooting plain based boolits ASBBPCd and getting great results. Gas checked boolits will likely be for hinting with 30 caliber rifles.

That's cool, but description bugs me, it's "half hard"

"A cold rolled, half hard alloy material with a R30-T hardness range of 56/68. Because of accurate thickness and temper, it is used for shimming in explosive atmospheres and where corrosion problems exist."

You have to click to page 3 to see 100" length which is better deal per sq. in. I did my math and if I buy .006" thick 6 x 100" I can make 14000 .22 cal gas checks. That's about 5 per penny.
