I have a winchester 94 carbine made in 1970. I replaced the factory rear sight with a marble's long semi-buckhorn. The original sight was long so that's why I went with the long version. I've often wondered about the short sight though.

What are the advantages of the short sight vs the long? Does it help aging eyes since it's farther out by nearly an inch? Or is it just cosmetic preference?

Long is usually for rifles, short is for carbines. Either can be used, I have no idea if the height ramp is different in the notch heights. But usually the dovetail on a rifle is cut a little further down the barrel than a carbine.

The short sight will place the U-Notch about 1'' further forward which might help if you're getting to the age where you need glasses to read.
