I just watched a Springfield 1847 musketoon sell for $500 on rock island auction.
I never heard of a musketoon before

The musketoon is a shorter-barrelled version of the musket and served in the roles of a shotgun or carbine. Musketoons could be of the same caliber as the issue musket or of a much larger caliber, 1.0–2.5 inches. The musketoon is most commonly associated with naval use, and pirates in particular, though they also served in a carbine role with cavalry. Musketoon barrels were often flared at the muzzle, resembling a cannon or blunderbuss. - Wikipedia -

That looks handy, maybe not for bringing the pain at distance but it tight quarters it'd be a dandy

I am building a Blunderbuss Kit right now.
It does not have a Flaired Muzzle.
But it has a Cannon Style Flaired Barrel at the muzzle.
I consider this more of a Musketoon than a true Blunderbus.
But they both have their place in history.

Springfield made them with 26" bbl for artillery and Calvary. They are great for big game hunting.

Usually 69-72 cal smoothie

Later on rifled

Dittos as to BP Bill. The CW Musketoons were primarily issued to artillery units in case they were attacked. Mounted infantry also used shorter rifles (the Zouave is a prime example). Cavalry got sabers & six shooters.

They make excellent hunting rifles especially the rifled muskets. See photo of elk taken with 58cal Enfield Musketoon. The short barrels (24") are very handy in and around vehicles.

I used to be in the Musketoon Club. Really liked Spin and Marty!
