View Full Version : RCBS 45-405-FN bullet hang up
Recently acquired a like new RCBS 45-405-FN GC mold. For my first casting session I was using BHN 15 indoor cast bullet scrap. For some reason I was having considerable difficulty getting bullets to drop from the mold. I have used this same alloy in several of my other molds from 25 up thru 45 with no problem. I smoked the mold thoroughly but made no difference. After about 50 bullets had been cast they started to fall out easier , but still a bit if a struggle. What am I over looking . As an added note I have a LEE 400gr 457 mold & bullets fall from it easily ???

If the mold was new, it might take a few cycles to cast well..........or there could be a burr.

If things don’t improve after a few cycles, you can try polishing it with a boolit and polishing compound. Granted, it’s a lot easier to polish aluminum or brass than steel, but you can do it.

Some of that is normal for a new mold.
I had one that straightened out after I rubbed the open face of the block on my blue jeans several times.

...was having considerable difficulty getting bullets to drop from the mold. What technique are you using to get bullets out of the mould?
I TAP with a piece 1/2" X 1" pine piece of wood. Tap at the junction of the mold handles. Been doing this technique for 50+ years & has always worked well.
