I suppose a 1 pass die would be useful for time saving, mine is 2 stage. I make checks as I enjoy reloading in all phases. Turn on the radio, pour some ice tea (not during casting) and I am in the zone. Baseball and boolits, that's my jam.

Thank you - I sent him a message as I'm looking for .35 cal gas-checks.

I hope you have better luck than me. I ordered one nine weeks ago and am still waiting. I was told last week mine was ready to ship but nothing so far.

From who - Dave's?

Yep, I was told when I ordered it that it would 2 to 4 weeks. Now it is stretched to 9. I inquired at about 6 weeks and was told that they were having a hard time getting material. At 8 weeks I e-mailed and told them to cancel my order and refund my money and was then told my gas check maker was ready to ship. A week later and still nothing. Maybe tomorrow.

I got a reply back telling me the price - and asking me to text someone else for more info. That's already getting on my bad side, but fine - I've sent the text.

Maybe you will get lucky. I don't like to knock anybody down but I also don't like to be given the run around. If they would just tell the truth I can handle that. I know sometimes things can go haywire.

Can anyone attest to the quality of the Matteson check maker?

I got one from him and it was wrong size. It took 8 weeks for the first one. He made another one and took 1.5 weeks. I had to give him exact measurements from a Gator check and my bullets. They are coming out the right size but they are getting stuck on the anvil and jamming up the whole die. You can not tell when it jams until it is really is too late.

Sure, I can understand that too. I was told 12 weeks lead-time.

I also mentioned the whole gas-check crisis to a young machinist friend of mine (who is also a shooter) and sent him Ed Smith's file on making a check-maker - he's going to run them up in CAD and see if it's something he wants to try.

Well, after 10 weeks I finally got my check maker. I haven't set it up yet. It is soaking in acetone. There is a lot of crud inside that I hope to get rid of. The only thing I have to test with is a couple of soda cans. I am not going to buy any metal until I see whether it is going to work. I will keep you guys posted.

Look around the house and see if you can find something a little thicker. 0.013"-0.145" is what you need to look for. The lid on a pop or beer can might be thick enough. If you can find a flat one. Do you have a old piece of aluminum siding? Maybe check that.

I will see what I can find. Like you I ran into the same thing. The gas checks are hanging up in the top part of the maker. I had to take a punch and hammer to get them out. Any suggestions ? Mine is a 22 caliber. I am hoping that it is because I am using the wrong metal.

Okay fellas. If you have a gas check maker ordered from this guy or are thinking about ordering one this is my experience. I found some aluminum that measured 0.013". I don't know what the parts on a gas check maker are called but you have a top which screws into the press and a bottom part that goes in like a shell holder. In the bottom part there is a round piece that forms the cup I think The gas checks are supposed to feed out of the top like a lee sizing die. On mine (22 caliber) the checks would hang up and you would have to get a hammer and punch to get them out. On the second piece of aluminum I put through it the round piece in the bottom part came out. I am not very happy about this. I should have stuck to my guns when I e-mailed wanting my money back. I should have known that when you get the run around like some of us have the quality of workmanship is going to be crappy. Another lesson learned. I sent an e-mail telling them about this,we'll see what kind of a reply I get.

I ordered one from the sharpshooter site. Looking at the specs on a .44 cal. mold, the heel dimension is .401 so the aluminum flashing would need to be about .0151" for a good crimped on fit. Does this seem right?

Edit; This tool must produce checks for plain base boolits. Flashing seems to run about .009" thick.

Sharpshooter must have just started making them again. They were showing discontinued for the last year or so.

Not sure if this will help or not but I have made 3 gas check makers now for myself. The first was similar to the Ed Wosika and Paco Kelly Freechex where a disk is punched then dropped into a forming die then a punch to drive it through the die. The next two were the Ed Smith design single stroke check makers.

I put a bit of taper on the forming punch that the check forms over but found in all three cases that the punch has to be polished SMOOTH! or the checks stick. I also found that using a bit of oil or WD40 on the material helps it release. I just wipe a bit on both sides before I start making gas checks. case sizing lube should work too.

You might try oil, WD40 or a wax for release agent to see if that helps and if not try polishing that little punch with very fine emery (like 600 grit or finer) or polishing compound. That is if the outfit won't make it right anyway.

Smooth punch and oil worked for me anyway.

Thanks Longbow. I will keep that in mind. The gas check maker was sent back yesterday. We will see how it is when it comes back. I was really surprised when the punch came out. He said he was going to weld it in place. I am pretty sure that the main problem is the gas checks jam up in the top part and it fouls everything up. You can't feel it coming it just jams. I am not going to get my hopes up.

Well, I hope he ships it soon and that it is a quality product. Want to try some softer lead .44 loads at 1200 fps or more.

That's his wife that he's telling you to text. She handles the paperwork he handles the lathe. Really good folks and really good tools

Had that happen with my 9mm Plain base maker from him, he made it right and the replacement works fine. He's constantly making small tweaks to make a better product. Sounds like you and I both got some that were pressed in but the clearances were a little off. It's a one man shop so lead times are off but they work well

I have a few. Quality is in line with Pat Marlin's tool. I had one that the punch came loose but they made it right. But I had a similar issue with one of my makers from Pat (on pats the forming punch had a nub that wasn't faced off) but he made it right as well.
Personally, I much prefer the single pass maker since the two pass maker is kinda fiddly handling the little discs and the ejector arm keeps falling out on my press

Got a shipping notice from Sharpshooter so mine should arrive this week. His website has no contact info but it was included with the shipping notice. Still wondering about the thickness of the flashing material I will need given the size of a typical .44 boolit gas check shank. Hoping there are good instructions.

Thanks for pointing that out. Just got an order in for one. Last time I had looked they had been unavailable also.
