A work in progress, almost complete.

The dial indicator measures the depth of penetration of the hardened ball bearing.

The black thing with pressure gauge is a hydraulic load cell. Tells me how much force is being exerted on the ball bearing penetrator.

The Brinell Hardness may be calculated using this information:

Diameter of ball

Depth of penetration

Load in pounds per square inch

I am building an Excell spreadsheet now to take care of the calculations.

First calculations show it is dead accurate.

Google Brinell Hardness and you can see the theory and the calculations.

It is a prototype, somewhat heavy built, parts totally from the scrap boxes in the shop. Combined with a good bit of machining on the vertical mill and the metal lathe. Next version will have a more refined design. For Version 2.0, I will make a custom dial for the dial indicator that will be direct reading in BHN, no table or calculations required.

Yea, big enough for ingots up to 2 inches thick.

Patterned after my Wilson Rockwell Hardness Tester: 200 pounds of good old heavy American Iron.

Checking hardness on the big 'ol BBK action. 34 on the Rockwell C Scale. This test uses a Diamond Penetrator.

Wow!

Very impressive build.
