Can I remove the shot load from low pressure/velocity shells and replace it with an equal weight of buckshot? Do not want to increase the recoil of the load.

Yes, you will be fine

Reason for the question is the Shotgun is a unfired 1950's bird gun that weights 6 pounds. Double barrel, 26 inch, open chokes. Want a couple of buckshot loads just cause bird shot is not good on pigs in the palmettos at bad breath distance.

If I had a gun that old that was unfired, I might be tempted to sell it and get a beater for hunting pigs.

I shoot Quail with the gun, it is treated well, no high pressure/recoil loads for it. Built for 20 gauge type loads, close range patterns (10 to 35 yds). Buckshot is for the random pigs that live in the same area, dangerous to the young dogs. It is a beauty of a bird gun. So far less than 3 boxes of #8's shot in it.

The only problem will be that buckshot takes up more space than small bird shot. Some wads like the Winchester AA collapse easily, making it possible to fit buckshot with no more changes.

I will be happy with 6 - OO buckshot, and filler (have a bottle of Grex). Will fill the empty space with grex and maybe filler wad. The shotshells are AALow Recoil, Winchester 3/4 oz. of #8 shot - 980 FPS. Shots with the buckshot will be very close, gun is to light for a round ball load.

What is grex? You can not add buffer safely.

I won't use then. It is an old polyester granular buffer used in buckshot loads by Winchester.

If you would like to make buffered buckshot loads you can, but it needs specific data. From what I gather, you want to dump out lead shot from factory ammo, and replace it with buckshot. Adding buffer adds thousands of PSI to the load. If you are loading your own, I'm sure there is some low recoil data out there with buffer that I can find.

Don't need that many, will just dump the shot and add an equal weight of OO shot. Thanks for the help and warnings. Danny

I don't know. This is best answered by Tom Armbrust.
