I just started getting back into using my press. opened up a bag of large pistol primers that a friend of mine had given me. He had gotten out of reloading. What I didn't notice was on the box they are Remington number 2 1/2 large pistol primers. I have only used large pistol primers. What is the difference? I tried looking online but not get a clear answer. It seems like that was Remington's idea of identifying their large primers.

Right. That is how remington identified them. They are just large pistol primers. Use them.

That is just Remington's number system. I have some rem 1 1/2 small pistol that are soft for use in 9mm and 38spl. Not sure what the 2 1/2 means, I'm sure someone else will know. If they are listed as large pistol should be good for 45acp, 45 colt, etc. Maybe for soft 44mag and 44 spl.

That's just their part number for standard large pistol primers.

Every company has their own way of identifying their products, and there really isn't any commonality in primer branding, other than the sizes and intended uses. MagTech also uses the 1 1/2 for Small Pistol Primers and 2 1/2 for Large Pistol Primers, but Winchester uses another system, as does Federal, CCI and S&B. There are others, and as mentioned, those are Remington Large Pistol Primers.

Hope this helps.

Thanks for all the answers. I have two brand new boxes of them and didn't want to just put them back on the shelf.
