I知 casting for the .45 Colt in both my Colt clone revolver, and 1892 Winchester, I知 useing the starting load for Trailboss powder. I知 casting two thousands over bore diameter in the .45 Colt SAA clone (.453). In the 1892 Winchester I知 casting at .454 0ne thousands over bore diameter. I知 useing the same load in both the rifle and revolver the boolit speed as per Hogdon load data is 727 FPS in the revolver, probably another 100 FPS out of the rifle. I知 currently useing the Lyman #2 alloy 9 lbs wheel weights and 1 lb 50/50 bar solder. My question is at such low velocity do I really need to use the bar solder, or could I get by WITH OUT LEADING my barrels with just useing the wheel weights?
Thanks
Paul

You didn't mention lube... but at those pressures/velocities
you could simply use pure lead if you had it.
WW is more than enough.

Thanks much, I tumble lube my boolits

I should have included the complete load.
It’s 4.5 grns Trailboss
606 FPS
8,800 psi
Thanks again for your time

Pure wheel weights are fine. You can even add some pure lead if you have some on hand and want to stretch your wheel weight alloy.

With ALOX being used -- WW or even pure lead would be fine

I would only add some tin if I was having trouble getting nice sharp corners on the bullets.

Diameters change with the alloy used. Pure= smaller. Add antimony rich linotype = larger.

For low pressure Centerfire loads, such as you mentioned, I use COWW blended with Pure Lead (50-50). You may experience smaller diameter boolits falling from your mold, BUT if the alloy is soft enough to obturate at that lower pressure, you will likely avoid lead fouling in the barrel.

I wanna thank all of you for your time and the good advice, my daughters boy friend works at a tire shop and he gave me a few hounded pounds of wheel weight. I’ll have to go through them and sort out only the ones I can cut with wire cutters, but that will save me a lot of money if I don’t have to buy any more bar solder.
