View Full Version : How could I have been so stupid?

I guess it all started back in 1972 when I began casting 55gn bullets for my 22/250 at a time when an RCBS mold was $AU12 and a box of Sierra 52gn hollow points was $AU4.65.

Next I bought a Lee mold for my Lee Enfield 303, and for the next 50 years I bought mold after mold for every rifle I aquired and lubesizers, and sizing dies which brings me up to today.

Over that time, I have bought a lot of rifles and pistols and doing a stocktake this past week, I have 118 boolit molds, 3 lubesizers, 42 sizing dies, 26 top punches etc. With the current gunshop stock shortages due to Covid-19, I find that there is nothing among my firearms that is likely to run out of components.

34,000 primers, 42 tins of powder and over 10,000 brass cases, 1,600 lbs of lead ingots made up as useable ingots. I must have been a very silly boy over the years buying all that junk as money and opportunity arose.

I live on a farm where I can shoot every day, don't pay range fees and print downloaded targets of the internet.

I think I might spend the afternoon plinking tin cans!:drinks:

We all approach the hobby differently. In my world, any more than 20 molds is silly. 34k primers is awful.

The good thing is YOU are happy. This week I sold 95k primers to one gentleman and we were both happy...lol.

Love the picture of some of your rifles. Some nice weapons there!!!

Like you, I can shoot for a long time but being an old man my time horizon is limited. If things stay stupid, I have a dozen molds I have never used to keep me busy. Never been much for cast in rifles but may travel that road if necessary.

I feel your pain. I just ordered 2 more molds an hour ago. I really don't need either of them but they will give me something to play with for a few months. My mind is always busy trying to come up with better ideas and this obsession has been a Godsend. I doubt I will live long enough to burn up any of the components I have accumulated and I'm not yet 58. I shoot competitively and go through around 30K rounds per year at present. My lead hobby is less damaging than many others might be to my health and it helps keep my mind busy. I have bought guns just because I didn't have any in that caliber before and needed a new project.

A pound of powder and five pounds of lead won't last as long with those big rifles. But sounds like you are certainly well-stocked.

Sitting on 20k primers I see your 34k and turn slightly green.

The biggest chunk of my powder stash is Red Dot/Promo. So to be able to use it all I am going to need more primers.

I'm just wishing I'd bought a couple of M1 carbines back when they were dirt cheap (under 100$)
And maybe I should have bought a cheap mauser or 3 and a few K-31's.

But no complaints here. I can carry on as I choose for a significant chunk of time before I run out of lead, primers, powder or guns.

Didn't work.

Very nice. I had a decent stash of everything but lost my firearms and supplies while canoing over to a friend's house a state or so away. It was tragic. I almost drowned in those mountain streams.

You evil scum sucking lucky SMART son of a gun! I've been doing it about 7 years longer, with not nearly as much to show for it. Don't worry about what Texas by God said. It ain't bragging when you can really do it. sniff, sniff!

Sounds like you are prepared like myself. I surprised you can do that there with all the firearms restrictions in Australia.

Great that you are all stocked up. I’m going the other way and selling off things. I put some 22 lr at auction, one plastic ammo can with 1600 CCI mini mags went for $us 375, I paid 100 for it about 6 years ago. Crazy times we live in mate. Tim
PS those rifle are beautiful just right for rabbits and such:p:p

Yeah......I missed the boat on the K-31. That was a deal when they were available cheap.
Never had a real itch for the M1 Carbine (but could have made some money , maybe?)
Missed a few other good deals along the way. 20/20 hindsight.

Excellent collection. You might consider taking a video of all of your stuff for insurance purposes.
I had a fire in my shop several years ago and the wife had me take a video of the house and shop about 6 months before. As I went through the house I talked about everything that was on the walls and book cases... My gun room was in the shop so I had video of the shelves with ammo, bullets, molds, dies, to go over for the insurance claim.

Did I mention that during the Covid lockdown, I was bored, so I did a bit of casting; about 25,000 boolits to feed the children. I won't say how many of them I own but the number is well into 3 figures.

You made me feel better. I probably have 25 molds in 15 or so caliber and I feel like I'm going overboard. I guess I'm still ok. Off to Ebay!

You have be well and truly beat on moulds, i'd have maybe 15, with a few double ups.

I do have you beat on lead ingots, i actually don't know how much is there, but it has to be around 10t by now.

Sadly i don't have enough dirt to be allowed to shoot on it, I have to rely on my local club to allow me to go pew pew at it when we aren't locked out due to covid.
