Got a buck and a doe in the past few days with a 350 gr rnfp. Accurate mold and cast from water quenched wheel weights. Both deer double lunged and each only ran about 30 yards after the shot. I try and shoot them in the shoulders so they don’t run but didn’t seem to hit bone on either one. No matter as the tracking job was very short. Blood trails cont to be sparse. These are deer number 6 and 7 with this load and tracking hasn’t been an issue yet so I’m confident the load is capable if I do my part. 12 gr of tight group makes this load very easy on the shoulder.

Congrats! I try to miss the shoulders as to save the meat.

There is essentially no meat loss with this slow lumbering slug.

Do you have an idea what the velocity is with that load? GF

My best guess would be in the 1200 FPS range maybe a hair faster with the 25” barrel. I don’t have a chronograph. 125 yards is the max distance I’ll take a shot with this load. The bullet is dropping like a rock and accuracy deteriorates out past 125 yards. Both deer were about 75 yards out when shot.

A 350 grain bullet moving at 1200 FPS is a lot of power. Those bullets might still be going.
I can see you are having fun with this. Two thumbs up! :drinks:
Nice.

CVA? Was just curious on specifics of rifle, and muzzle break if stock. Congratulations on the harvest.

Good afternoon and Congratulations x 2 !!

Cva scout v2, completely stock. I’ve loaded some 300 gr hornady jacketed bullets in 2000 fps range and it is no fun at all to shoot, even with the break.

Great shooting! Those double lung shots get the job done with virtually no meat loss.. I shot one last day of muzzle season in Oh. the other day, double lung around 50 yds, with a Barns spitfire TEZ 250 grn, left a quarter size exit hole and that doe still went about 150 yds but left an easy blood trail..

I also downed a buck and a doe with my CVA hunter. My load was the lee 340g, powder coated to .459, over I think 35 gr 3031 and .5 gr Dacron. Buck was a double lung shot and went about 40 yards with a good blood trail, the doe was DRT. I love my hunter in 45-70 hope they don't outlaw it for deer next year.

Congrats! I can't wait for 2021 deer season already, I will be using the venerable 45-70 with cast as well for the first time.

WC870. All i can say, it "just works". I have had it for 3 season's now pulled the trigger 5 times with 4 deer on the ground

Wow fine deer, and I do understand. A 45-70 will give you a good whupping if you ain't careful. Killed my first deer with an 1895 Marlin without a recoil pad and shooting store bought ammo. This was back in 1990 or so.

Congratulations on a very successful season!
Have an estimate of velocity with that load?

Brett Ross
01-15-2021, 03:55 PM
Looking though load manuals I would guess 1500 FPS or so. I could have been definite if I did not put a (big o'l hole) in my chrony

Nicely done.
I've never understood why some folks max load a 45/70 for deer.
Your success verifies that easy loads with a big daylight transfer factor do the job nicely.
