Oh, that's easy.

You want a roundnose bullet to be most correct for a gun that was originally intended to work with roundnose ammo

Lyman 452374. Correct ogive shape. Looks right. Feeds just like ball. Accurate.

What's not to like?

35Remington (GOOD name!) has it right.

After several decades of messing with other .45 bullet designs, I have at last formally adopted the 452374 as my #1 main-focus .45 ACP bullet. There's a 4-cavity mould for the 374 holding down some prime shelf space here, and about 3000 loaded rounds with the ol' design ready to be fired. I've even disposed of some other .45 moulds, and brothers, if I sell a mould, there has been some SERIOUS prior thought involved.

Anyone else recall the ancient Gillette razor ditty?? "....looks right, feels right, etc etc..." Yep, just like the 452374. If all we're concerned with is great accuracy and reliable function, this bullet is fantastic. In all honesty, I must also say that I'd HATE to step into the path of one of them, just as with a FMJ of the same configuration.

RCBS currently makes a 225 grain round nose with two large bearing bands. It duplicates the GI round ball bullet. Also if you can find one; the H&G #34 is an excellent duplication of the GI bullet and needless to say the H&G molds are the Rolls Royce of molds...but they cost. On the economy side Lee makes an excellent 45 mold that also has the correct ogive shape and weighs 228 grains. And last but not least Saeco produces a GI ball facsimile that gives good results. Good shooting. LLS

I think for a while I will be looking for a source for already cast and sized. Not sure how much I will be shooting it. Don't shoot a bunch of Wild Bunch here. But want to have the ammo when I get the chance. Will primarily be my Carry gun with Factory SJHPs.

Thanks all,

Sam :-D

Ken,

Thanks, Don't have sizing equipment or a source for hard lead at the moment. All I am casting is roundballs with soft lead. Hope you are doing better.

Merry Christmas,

Sam :-D

You could try 185 or 200gr SWCs as well. I've been using WST and these boolits in my .45s and they work well. For carry ammo, Winchester 230gr Ranger works well and fed just fine in my WWI.

If you're so inclined in the future, Ted Yost does a retro carry package.
