So I'm backcasting again been 5 years since I had space and room to do it in but I now own a house with a lot of lands. So I just got into 300 BLK before I had to stop casting and reloading. I mostly shoot 110-115 gr factory rounds through it and like to find a mold that I could get that weight but have not had much luck with.

Anyway, I have a 150gr, 160gr, 170 gr, and 230 gr molds. The first question I have as I got the 230 gr for $10 is it any good in a weapon that is not suppressed? Is it worth loading? I'm trying to only cast boolits that will be useful for hunting and HD.

I'm not looking to cast for a boots that will not be used to be one that takes up a lot of lead. Thanks for the help and advice.

There are some conditions that make the definition of good vs not good for your application.

First is barrel twist. Those long heavies need a fast twist to stabilize at lower velocities. And it differs by barrel make....I had a 1:8 that would keyhole that 230 at 25 yards even supersonic and I had a 1:8 that stabilized it fine subsonic....just depends and you'll have to test it to see.

As far as utility as a supersonic bullet....prob not the best choice in that cartridge. It will work and some guys say it upends with enough regularity to expect it to tumble when it hits deer....but it's just ify enough for me to not want to use it hoping it turns sideways when there are other great options for cast in 300 blk.

I found alot of success in the lighter offerings...and playing with alloy and velocity (gas check and powder coat are your friends if velocity in high pressure caliber like 300 blk are your goals)

The 312-155 mushrooms like a dream at close range when made of 50/50 water quenched powder coated and gas checked....loaded to 2100 fps in a 1:8 16" barrel...did not expect the results o got but I get them every time

Heavy bullets drive deeeeeep but often don't have the umph to expand reliably (unless hollow pointed and that is a whole other ball of wax)

I would test out your lighter molds and get an alloy/velocity mix that gets you good accuracy and play that tune on repeat.

There is load data for the heavies that are supersonic. They can actually be quite effective.

Is the 230 grain a Lee mold? Most people seem to be not too impressed with the design.

Subsonic loads can be still quite and accurate out to 100 yards without a suppressor.

Just listing various grains doesn’t really tell a person much about any specific bullet and how well it will work in 300 blackout. For any useful advice you’ll have to list the specific molds you have and the guns you have - AR pistol, AR rifle, bolt action, or other.

I think NOE has a 137gr rnfp mould and Accurate also has one about the same weight that should work

I know that 247-grain sub boolit rings the heck out of steel

My go-to mold is an NOE C309-15 3R SP, but I do have the Lee 309-230 and the Lee C312-155 2R. The 155 shot fine when lubed with Alox and Mineral Spirits, but not well when powder coated. After buying the NOE 150 it has become my go to boolit, the Lee 155 works great in my Argentine Mouser.

Anything can go sub sonic, cycling an AR 15 gets more complicated. I built both an AR Carbine and Pistol, neither of which I have shot for some time. CA made everything Black and Beautiful banned, I had to move those out of CA where I spent more time. I caught the 300 BO bug in 2013, as did my wife. Making a sub sonic round was not hard, but I don't have a suppressor as of yet. Still, sub rounds are quieter without a can. I just think a sub at 230 will be good pig medicine.

A lighter boolit in 300 BO? okay, sounds good. I like cast, and think the 150 is good for cast. I have read so much in jacketed 110 or 125, just haven't seen much on lighter cast boolits. My first cast for 300 BO were Lee 309-150 RF, a mold I had for my wife's 30-30. It shot great, I still wanted something 'pointier' for 308 and 30-06. BTW, the 150 RF shot great in 308 and 30-06 as well. YMMV, I always hope to drop some spina porcus with some cast boolits!

So, i tried some cast 230s years ago and they were great in a bolt gun but would not fit in an AR mag. I cant remember the load i used but it was hearing safe without a suppressor. I personally feel 220 is about the max for my comfort level. They were cast fairly soft and smooshed pretty well in testing but were not stable past 50 yards. It was a 1:7 twist.

I use 145 & 170gr super in the BO, run the 170 @ 850 fps, fun. You could run the 100 gr soupcan seated real shallow. I've heard of running the 30 carbine mould for pests.

I have just started playing with 300BO, shot some jacketed just to break in the rifle. It is an AR. The only cast I’ve tried so far is some plinker loads wit a .311-100-2R and 10grs of Unique. Fun to shoot but obviously don’t cycle the action. I need to make more brass and I’m going to try the Lee 155gr Sovietski bullet, the Lee 170grFP which has a pretty small meplat so hopefully it’ll feed, and the ranch dog 160 gr which might not.

That's my favorite "light" 300 BO boolit.

With the deep hollow point pin those things vaporize a watermelon.

I have that 130 gr mold mentioned by Burnt Fingers from Mihec (MP molds) that I understand is specifically for the 300BO. I don't own a 300 BO but my Mossberg 30/30 loves that boolit as well as one of my 308's. It is a great mold that is a semi-point that is adjustable from a flat point to shallow hollow point to a deep hollow point. It would be a heck of a hunting boolit in any one of those configurations. The shallow hollow point is devastating on coyotes and the flat point for deer IMHO.

It's a clone of the Lyman 311410 which was made for the .30-30.
