Quick question, when y'all are using 100% clip on wheel weights how hot do you let the your alloy get before you start pouring and where to you like to keep it ?
Thanks !

If I'm melting down scrap to make ingots (smelting), I just make sure the metal is hot enough to pour free, no lumps or junk (Junk should have been scoped off before hand). I've never worried about melt temp. Now, casting bullets from the pot is different, temp can make a difference.

In my bottom pour casting furnace with clip on WW or similar, I keep the PID set at 720 F. Depending upon the material the mold is made from will set the casting tempo. Aluminum likes to be run fast. Iron (Lyman or RCBS) I tend to run a bit slower to maintain the mold temperature. Also adjust tempo for ambient air temperature which alters the rate of mold heat loss.

straight COWW --PID - 720° good temperature for most of my casting

I don’t have a PID, just a thermometer. I try to keep it between 720-750. If I am running wheel weights with Rotometals Super Hard I try to keep it in the 750-770 range.

I agree, I keep my P.I.D. set at 725 for wheel weights. Your alloy will let you know, Frosty boolits is too hot, poor fill out, too cold. Let your casting results dictate what temp. Your mold should also be up to temp, that's where a hotplate come in handy, along with a good steady cadence casting. It's a combination of everything that produces good boolits.

685 F-725 F works for me. Your mold will tell you a lot and some are a little different. Brass vs Aluminum vs Mehanite.

I don't use a thermometer, I did a while ago but found I was looking at the fill out, etc of my boolits anyway and since I ladle and pot cast (archaic I know) I just wait till they look right and start keeping them.Their appearance tells you the temp is good.

Depending on the mould I'm using I'll have the PID set at 700-750 for COWW or 94-3-3.

I have no idea. I run three 2 cavity molds in tandem with the Lee bottom pour furnace turned to max. Works for me.

700-750* according to my lead thermometer.

750F is a good place to start for me. I think my thermometer is pretty close.

This weekend I cast 44 caliber 220 grain bullets with wheel weight alloy. It is a 4 cavity aluminum mold. I was casting indoors with a room temperature of 60 degrees. The sweet spot was 710 degrees. This gave me fill out and a dull gray finish with out any frosting.

Yep same here never owned a thermometer . Wait 5 min after it goes liquid and start dipping and pouring
