So what did you use to harvest your elk. And what yardage?

So what did you use to harvest your elk. And what yardage?Depends on the elk I guess, one was killed with a 215gr Hornady out of a 300 PRC at 515yds thorough the neck. The other was from a 200gr cast with a 401 Winchester at 85yds through the neck as well. Both were already wounded, neither moved more than 3 feet straight down to the ground.274430274431

Sweet, sounds like if you keep working on it you might get a load dialed in one day. Lol

I see what you did there....
What's a 300 PRC? I'm new at this.

The ones I've killed with cast have been under 50 yards.

White Eagle has it right.
It's basically a 300 Win Mag that enables one to accommodate higher bullet weight for caliber due to design. My family got me a Christiansen Arms Ridgeline chambered in it for me for Christmas 2 years ago, it's extremely light weight (after I had mentioned that I wish I had a dollar for every mile I've packed around a piece of steel and walnut......) it's very fun and I am learning to enjoy it for elk hunting. But I guess I still was packing a 1910 Winchester at some point also, so I must not be all the way sold yet.

This is the world I live in also, and most of those cast kills were with my front stuffer.

It's been a few years, but:

Traditions .54 cal Hawken, 440gr pure lead home cast conical, 110gr 777, standard iron sights, 165 yards.
Cow elk - disconnected all the plumbing to the heart and kept going out the other side.
Ran 10 ft, dropped and slid back to where she started.

I had practiced out to 180 yards with that rifle and load, so I was pretty confident in the shot.

I have had the itch and very strong to shoot my 54 again
I tried the inline stuff this year and was not happy
but that was my fault
sorry for the hijack

TC Hawken in .54 also. The Maxiball conicals. All inside of 50 yards.

I guess the question wasn't just this year.
I have killed elk with (cast bullets in all): 405 WCF with a 300gr, 35 WCF 250gr, 30-30 165gr, 45-90 300gr, 50-70 425gr, 44 Mag 220gr, and my personal favourite- a Colt 1860 revolver, shot a young bull at 12 yards with a patched round ball. Shot him three times before he stayed down for good, he travelled a total of about 100 yards.

The rifle is light for that caliber. How is the recoil with the muzzle brake?

The rifle is light for that caliber. How is the recoil with the muzzle brake? It's actually very nice ro shoot. I'm fairly convinced that stock profile has quite a bit to do with felt recoil. My 12 year old shoots it quite comfortably, and my assistant ended up asking for the same rifle for Christmas (this is her, I made her work the day after Thanksgiving - and found her this deer - she killed him at 425yds with the same rifle)https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20210107/05087d36d980340966daea8c59711cfc.jpg
