My brother left me 1,200-1,500 93 grain 9x18 lead bullets. Can they be swagged to work in 9mm? .365 made .358. How hard is it to change a lead bullet by .007? I don't know their hardness and I mic-ed a few to confirm the .365 (which is on the box). I have been reloading on and off about 50 years but have never did any swagging. With how hard it is to get reloading components I thought I inquire into this conversion. Comments and suggestions are appreciated.

That's a lot. It might work, but I think you'd want to do it in several steps.

If you used a push-through sizer and did it in one step I'd expect it to actually trim material off the bands, leaving a fin around the base. But in .002 steps it might work.

Not sure how a lubrisizer would do, but again I think you'd have better luck in steps.

I've never tried to do more than .004, and doing that in one step in a push-through left a lot of lead in my sizer die and left fins on the base of the bullets. Doing it in two .002 steps worked fine.

I've did that to quite a few 95 gr swc mak bullets to .358 in one pass with Lee push through dies I lubed mine with thinned LLA not a lot of bearing surface on them short bullets so went easy in my RC press

Welcome to cast boolits.

IF they are commercial cast they could be 15-16 BHN which would make the "swaging down" a lot harder. I agree with needing 2 steps .004 each (which is still a lot for hard boolits) You might get drag fins at the lube grooves and base.

Maybe you could trade them for 9mm boolits.

Sure its possible. Not always easy. A sturdy press and tumble or sizing lube will make a difference. Definitely wouldn't do it on a lubrisizer. Use a Lee push through. Remember bullets work soften so the BHN won't matter once your done. The will elongate aswell.

I would see if I could trade them. If not, do it in steps. If you liquid lube, don't worry about losing the lube grooves. If you conventional lube, size/lube in small steps of .002-.003 which will keep lube in the grooves. You will get tail fins but I haven't found them to make a difference at close range. YMMV

I've swaged bullets down that much. You get some inconsistencies in the driving bands. It would be okay for short range plinking. Lubed with one shot case lube, be a lot easier.

I'll trade you for unsized RCBS 115 gr or lyman 90 gr .355.

You need to get a Mak and some dies to go with your bullets :Fire:

Sell or trade them. Currently, just about all reloading components are bringing a premium. Sell or trade them for something you can use.
