I have some Lyman #358439 hp's coming in. They are advertised as 165gr. My problem is I have nothing showing data for .38/.357 with the 165gr #358439. Lyman Cast Handbook has data for the #358429, should I use that data since there is only approximately 3-5 gr difference in bullet weight?

Try here for data, not exact 165 but close and you can work up the load ... http://stevespages.com/358_7.html

I found the bullet in one of the older ideal catalogs, #40 I think but most of what was there was out of date. my ideal 358439 and Lyman 358429 hollow point molds drop near identical bullets

Here's a place to start:
http://www.lasc.us/Fryxell38KeithHP358439.htm

with the usual disclaimers of how these worked in my guns and to be taken with standard precautions, both sized to .358 with either Lyman Alox or Moly lube out of a Lyman 45:
.38 4in S&W Mdl-10- 2.4g of Bullseye using range scrap lead OAL 1.52 for 924fps with an SD of 10
.357 5.5 Colt SAA- 12g of 2400 14bhn lead OAL 1.553 for 1286fps with an SD of 18

type 358439 hp load data in the search box in the upper right corner of this page

I'd just use the 170-grain data. It's safe to use load data from a heavier boolit, then developed a load that works best in your gun

I have that mold, just haven't gotten around to working up a load for it yet :(

I have the MP Mold version of the 358439 mold. I just use the 358429 load data. Note: For .357 Magnum, this bullet's load data is based on crimping over the leading edge of the front driving band due to the short cylinders of S&W 27/28 and some Ruger revolvers. If you are able to crimp in the crimp groove with your .357, pressure/velocity will be a little less.

Thanks for the links and info. I wish I had stumbled in the door earlier because this forum is the best. I'm planning on loading some of these up for the wife's snubby (+p rated).

Cargo,

Since I use this bullet for my snubby CCW, here is a hint for developing the .38 Special +P FBI Load. Your bullet cast soft (less than 1% Sb, more than 2% Sn), 7.0gr HS-6, and a magnum primer. From my 2.5" snubby I get 940fps.

Don, thanks for your pet load. The company just informed me their BHN is 14 on these bullets. So I'm going to have to find a mold or another supplier for softer lead bullets.

Understand. Here's a pic of what the aforementioned alloy does coming out of a snubby.

The only place I have ever seen data for the 358439 is in Elmer Keith's first book "Sixgun Cartridges and Loads" copywrite date of 1935.

I would use data for the 358429.

Don, those are beautiful. I wouldn't feel bad about having a few boxes of those laying around.
