Wolfdog, you're not the only one who loves any of the old Remington or Winchester 22 rifles. Think you did very well regarding the price. And yes they are special. Frank

The old Remington 500 series .22 bolt actions were inexpensive rifles but never cheap rifles. Lots of people underestimated the quality of those rifles.
There was a time when you could find good used examples of Remington .22 bolt actions for very little money. They were often derided as "farm guns" or "truck guns" and sold for very little money. A savvy person could pick up an excellent .22 rifle for little cash.

Then two things happened: Owners of the old 500 series Remington rifles started to recognize the quality of those rifles and they didn't appear on the used market as often.
AND
The ones that did end up on the market were priced higher.

The OP has proven that there are still good deals to be had.

521T is light enough to be practical squirrel gun. Last one I had the reciever sight was a Lyman. Most of them have factory reciever sights. These old rifles would be custom in today’s world. When these guns were sold if they didn’t shoot, the company wouldn’t be around long. The last new bolt action 22 I bought was in 80s, a Ruger 77/22. It’s a nice rifle and probably cost more to make than a 500series Rem or Win B/A of the day. Thing is it doesn’t shoot any better than the old everyday B/A 22s.

A belated welcome to our group. Great buy and I envy you those young eyes. Nice shooting rifle and yes I love the old rifles also and the Remington 500 series is about top of the line. My Dad would buy nothing else but Remington. Take Care and enjoy that rifle, you have a keeper. james

I didn't see you were newer, welcome and howdy from Ky if I ain't said so already.

I got my dog trained to set and watch while I shoot. She sets where I put her, generally 15 to 25 yards behind me depending what I'm shooting. She sets and watches while we shoot clays sometimes. I don't take her a lot, but got her accustomed to it.

That targetmaster I mentioned, it would cut one hole at 25 yards. I used to could hit an empty 22 casing when I could see it. It would do that with federal bulk. But it would only do an inch with winchester bulk. CCI mini mags were not much better. Find what it likes and you will be very happy. Don't forget a few fouling shots between brands when you switch. Or if it's on crows, it would be fowling shots.

You will NOT regret that one, sir. Those are great little rifles.

I enjoyed the video very much. Casual front porch shooting with dogs and cows moving around; same here my friend. My 510 Targetmaster is a treasure, your true target rifle is even nicer. The critic from the U.K. site is just jealous of your freedom to shoot guns in your yard! Rock on.

In reference to one of the comments from the UK. I agree those targets suck. I've messed around with different targets to find what works the best for me. So far, it is cardboard backer and a bright green square "dot". A member here gave me a roll of sticky back lime green paper. It makes for easy seeing.

Another thing I do, is use paper plates. I draw an outline square with a black sharpie, and fill in the middle with a highlighter. That works good for me out to 25 and 50 yards.

When I bought targets, EZ2C brand bright orange worked well.

I've found I can cut my groups in half depending on the targets used.

wolfdog, thank goodness for young people like you who know and appreciate quality older guns. Those old 22's bring back a lot of memories of waiting for squirrel season and the sight and smells of a fall day hunting small game. That rifle is a real treasure that your children and grandchildren will cherish for decades to come. Congratulations.

Hey, great find! I have shot those in completion, way back in school, they are accurate. I fully understand the obsession, lite. Those rifles from that period have a personality and just tickle my fancy big time. Probably shouldn’t tell you about my weakness for Remington M17 shotguns, suspect you might like those too.

Dad had a couple of the 521s come through the collection when I was growing up and I loved them. At the time, I was getting into small bore three position a little and wanted a 513T, the heavy barreled one, but never did.

Agreed on those old Remingtons. I like my Winchester 72A better than my Remington 511, but the Remington is the better shooter.

Congrats! You did well to buy that. A quality .22 bolt rifle is basic equipment for a shooter. It will never wear out if you clean it from the breech end, and never from the muzzle. Actually, you should not need to clean it very often. Bores are worn out from muzzle end cleaning rod wear.

YEs, these old 500 series are great. All that I have had were exlt shooters.
Have had several 521Ts, esp good rifles. Great for my son when he was young.
Two that I have kept all these years are
1. a Rem 514 single shot that I paid $12.65 for in 1956 at 13 years old
2. Rem 513-SA Sporter that cost me $60 in about 1967.
The both have accounted for many squirrels, some rabbits,
The 513SA, fitted with a USA Weaver T-10 has accounted for many
Prairie Dogs out to 165 yards. Also shot some .22 Silhouette with it

Wolfdog91,

Thanks for sharing your find and the video. You made out real good on that one. I don't need another .22 LR, but watching that video sure has me thinking I 'want' another one.

Nice find! You got a deal on that. Beautiful stock and metal. I agree whole heartily about those old Remington. If I ran across one of those in that shape and a reasonable price, I'd snag it in a heartbeat. Ya did Good!

I grew up shooting a 510.

It's the one firearm I didn't get when my dad died. I've looked for a replacement for years.

They are either beat to death or made of gold.

I have picked up a few other Remington 5xx rifles though.
