stevens/savage letter codes

I've been looking for a 20 ga SxS and stevens/savage have letter codes like "H" "C" "A" and etc. What do these stand for?

They indicate changes to the original design. Exactly what changes, you have to have a specific model of gun in mind and then read up on it. Sometimes you can puzzle this information out by looking the model up in a book like "The Blue Book of Gun Values" or "The Gun Trader's Guide."

I have a 2014 Standard Catalog of Firearms. In it there is this letter code for year made of Stevens double-barrel shotgun that goes from A-1949 through X-1970.
