458 Socom question

Has anyone tried Lyman 457658 Single Cavity Bullet Mold in 458 socom? If so, what kind of load?

You did not say what rifle but the most common is the AR-15 platform. If so, that bullet will not work according to my calculations. The maximum cartridge length to fit in a AR-15 magazine is 2.260". The bullet you suggested is 1.407" long. From the base to the leading edge is .500" or .907" of bullet protruding out of the case. ( 1.407 - .500 = .907" )
The length of .458 SOCOM brass is 1.575". Add the protruding bullet length of .907" and you get 2,482"OAL which will not go into a AR-15 magazine. Double check me but I think I am correct.
The 458 SOCOM is not a SAAMI cartridge so all loading data that I have found is second hand and unpublished internet data. I have it in a spread sheet if you want a copy PM me. The most popular powders are WW296, Re 7, and IMR 4198. I don't like WW296 in this application as it is a dual based powder. Most data I have found is for jacketed bullets.

W296 and Reloder 7 are both double based powders, 4198 ,both flavors, are single base.

I did not realize Re 7 was a double base powder. I have never used it. I do not like WW296 due to the recommendation of not reducing powder weight in pistol cartridges. Thanks for pointing that out.
