Greetings;
My 405gr Mountain Mold, 80% Meplat, .100" Bore Riding nose, hardcast can harvest firewood, but 100yd+ accuracy not so good. I've tried several powders [3031, 4198, Unique, Trailboss] & loadings for sure, but time to consider "more appropriate" profile? ...or "Is a large Meplat all that bad for accuracy?"

Appreciate field experience based input, or at least a good story is still entertaining, eh. Merry Christmas, etc.

I have had no luck with such bullets either. In 45/70 #3 Ruger and 44mag #3 Ruger. I have tried several that I bummed or bought. The RCBS & Lyman 405gr original style bullet does better in both Ruger and Marlin 45/70s for me. I have never shot them in RBs & Trap Doors. I’ve not had trouble killing deer with anything. Bigger stuff you might gain some kill power.

I'd try an express type bullet for a lever gun . Say 292-330gr. Possibly a little larger in diameter as well, doesn't look like it fills the bore.

I like my Lyman 405, and it likes coming out of my Marlin CB at the old Springfield trap door-ish speeds
with both 3031 and 4198.

I'd tinker around with the speed a little before I gave up on your mold design.

What is your accuracy, and how fast are you driving them?
I never got turned on by large meplat bullets in anything. I find that the gas checked RCBS 300g and 405g cast with wheelweight lead as good as the Remington or Hornady 300g hp and the 405g jacketed bullets, for groups of around 1'' at 100 yds using imr4198 and Unique, and AA2200 full power in the lighter of these weights.

Not .45-70, but .45 Colt, I've had good accuracy with this bullet in 1:20 inch twist in .45 Colt H&R Handi Rifle to 300 yards with IMR4227 filling case gently without compression. Tom Ellis at Accurate could add a .090" GC heel at the base to bump up weight a bit and tweak the band and nose diameters for your .45-70 and would be a no brainer.

I had excellent results using the Lyman 457124 385 gr. round nose in my 70's vintage 1895 and a converted Siamese Mauser. We used to pop balloons at 300 yards with those. They seemed to shoot as accurately as I could hold out to 300 yards anyway.

Is that boolit at or over groove diameter (preferably a couple of thou over)?

Have you recovered any boolits and checked for gas cutting on the base and sides?

Are you getting any leading? If not then gas cutting isn't likely.

I used to load pretty hot using PB boolits in my old 1895 but no issues.

Looking at your slug if it was mine I would want as fat as would chamber.
Your bore rider is only riding on the lands.
Nose shape is really no issue for 100 yard accuracy as long as it is concentric.

1"-2" @ 100yd with 40gr of 3031, or 27gr of 4198. Haven't tried Unique yet. Thanks.

For clarification, that's just the .100" dia nose that rest in the bore...thought it was a cool idear.

Sizing to .461" & shows good groove engagement; never recovered fired pills; no leading up to 1500fps with Delux Alox lube, 4 swipes with Hoppes and bbl is clean! Yeah, I'm surprised too. Maybe it's the hardcast alloy I made & water quench dumped right out of the mold. After 3 months my "hammer" test was impressive [to me] as hard to deform & no splintering. Thanks.

My Marlin loves this Accurate mold with IMR3031 at around 1400fps. Ragged one hole groups for for five rounds at 50 yards.
