Reading a current thread here and all the thoughts on helping. When did nipples start being threaded? I thought most of them were tapered and pounded in.

You may be thinking of grease nipples or Zerks, some of which are the drive in type. Never heard of firearm cones or nipples other than threaded, wouldn't they blow out?

The early percussion lock was a Consol lock that was a modified flint lock with a hammer replacing the flint cock. A brass small tube filled with percussion compound was placed in the pan and crushed by the hammer with the flash going through the touchhole. The next generation was the percussion cap and nipple, but I think nipples have always been threaded.
