I've been working a ton of hours lately! This is our peak season, and I was only able to hunt a couple days this year here in Pa. Today I watched 7 or 8 does for about an hour trying to pick out the biggest one. Finally I got a clean shot at what I thought was a good sized deer. I squeezed the trigger and the next thing I saw was the deer on the ground with it's legs in the air! The rest of the deer were just standing there like they were waiting for their companion to get back up. They ran away as I approached the downed deer. I immediately noticed it was a small doe, but I was thankful for the opportunity to get a clean shot with such limited time to hunt. It should be great eating...

I center punched it right behind the shoulders at 65 yards with a Lyman 311041 doing about 2100 fps. Alloy was water drop hardened 50/50 mix of wheelweights and lead at 14 Bhn. Bang-flop! Complete pass through. My first deer with this bullet, hopefully not the last!

I had a dog of a barrel on my Mossberg 500 before I added the rifled.tack driver.
I was.laying in a dead-furrow and shot at a does chest from 15 yards aiming, aiming, aiming at the broadside doe and shot off her jugular behind her chin. Dang! I said.
She flopped upside down and kicked all four legs like secretariat in the backstretch but catching only air. The other doe stood within four or five feet from her acrobats and watched me. I was laying absolutely prostrate with my hat down over my face. Stupid doe ignored her dying associate right next to her then walked out of possible shot with fawns next to her. Nature cannot be explained.

better to shoot the younger cull deer. Leave that large doe to make 2-3 babies next year. Then you can get one or two next year. That larger doe will stick around as long as pressure is not too bad.

Good job! But don't be surprised if the next one you shoot with that placement doesn't result in a bang/flop. As often as not, they take off as if you missed and run a little before they run out of steam. That's to be expected and when you do get a bang/flop, that's just so much for the better.

If you already knew that, please excuse my ramblings.

Good job Sir ! And good shot . Did the bullet clip the spine or close to it ?usually with that behind the shoulder shot they run some till they figure out their dead .

nelsonted1, now who in the world knows what a deadfurrow is? And who plows any more? But to everyone, great job getting your deer. Life can still be good and what a great place to social distance, in the field or woods.

Nothing wrong with shooting a tender one. Every cut on that deer can be made into a tender steak or the best venison jerky you can make. The best method I've found for judging an antlerless deer is by looking at their head length from the side. Younger deer have shorter heads and older does have long heads. Sounds simple but start looking them over and you'll notice what I'm talking about. Of course its not a fool proof method but it works in the places I hunt pretty good.

You did good and very good eating also. I shoot the first one show up , I am after the meat. Like I was told by someone in the past , they have not seen a recipe to eat the horns. I just call the antlers a bonus if I do shoot one, You have some fine eating there .

That's a good hunt. Glad you were able to fit it into the tight schedule. I find bang/flops a rare occurrence with the types of cartridges we are allowed to use in Ohio. Yet, when they do happen all the better.

Thanks everybody! Lungs of this deer were soup, but the heart was untouched. Maybe a larger deer would have taken longer to expire, but I think flat point bullets are just superior killers. I had great results in the past with a Marlin 1894C in 357 mag with 180 grain LBT WFN's. At woods ranges the little gun was deadly. Never had to shoot a deer twice!

Forgot to mention, my current lead slinger is a 1970 Marlin 336 in 30-30 with Microgroove rifling. Shoots wonderfully with cast, but I took the time to lap it and make sure the tightest part of the bore is the muzzle. Bullets are sized to .310, bore measures .309 at breech and .308 at muzzle. Scoped it with a Leupold Vari-x II 1-4 power.

Interesting color pattern on that deer, lots of white. Nice shot also.

Just to add some information... I did find that the bullet penetrated and broke the offside shoulder before exiting the deer's body. Probably had something to do with why it dropped so quickly!

What load did you run with the bullet? I am waiting for the same mold to be come available to load for the 30-30 and will use a ladder load to see what I like the best using 3031. Did you Powder coat it? Might even try it for 30.06 as I have not found a larger FP bullet I like yet.

I think the flat nose shock knocked her down. I have destroyed shoulders with 50 cal BP and 30.06 and watched them still run off on three legs, until they fell over from loss of blood.

I've loaded that same 311041 in 7.62x39 in a handli rifle and done-in several deer. It works great down at 1800fps also!

I use that same bullet , the Lyman 311041 . I first started using in my Marlin 336 . Then I sold the Marlin when I got my 1946 Winchester 94 . Interesting , my Winchester uses the same size as my Marlin did . I use 25 grs of IMR 3031 or 26-28 grs of IMR 4895 with great success . From what I can gather , the velocity runs about 1700-1800 depending on which powder and charge weight . The reason I sold the Marlin was that I had to " knock " with a mallet the rear sight as far over to the right as it would go and even though it was just barely enough to get the POA-POI the same . I thought it was just my rifle or maybe me . Later , had the same situation with my sister's SS Marlin . At that point I decided , if I was going to keep the Marlin , it needed a scope . I have never owned and shot a scoped rifle , didn't see any reason to change . The Winchester is " spot on " , the rear sight centered nicely on the barrel . Regards Paul

That's weird. My sights are centered on the barrel and the 311041 hits point of aim at 50 yards. I do have a 1-4x scope on mine just because my eyes aren't what they used to be. Great rifle!

those marlins from 60's and 70's are my favorites, I think marlin was at a peak production point in that era, put out real fine mass produced rifles.
