Well folks it's been several years at my club and the damage to the back stop has gotten bad enough it's time to rebuild it.

We are looking at getting quotes from some major range dealers hear in Utah. But we are very limited on space.

We are thinking big redoing the ventilation blind style. But with more modern steel and no sand.

Would like to have the bullets get directed down into a pan of some sort.

Thoughts?https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20201212/4ce60682af2c27ff8b2a3ac8d80078d9.jpghttps://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20201212/1da7245bf566b8ba82898115b6b41b0f.jpg

Just a thought here, you might look at one of the systems like the NRA put into their range at Fairfax. It has water cascading across the tilted steel backstop to not only help control bullet lead, but reduce dust as well. Your ventilation system won’t have to work so hard.

I’m sure the folks @ NRA would be more than happy to discuss it with you.

But then you’ve got lead contaminated water to deal with. I’m sure that it just doesn’t go out to the curb. How do they get the lead out of the water?

Don't want to deal with water at all.

All water options were voted err shot down

So this is what we are dealing with.

This is normal has a cover if a few layers of cardboard to keep dust and spalding downhttps://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20201216/19dcbe67a96784c5e97d029e814db5be.jpghttps://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20201216/28ed4e12366d8e9d6b0f316786f1d400.jpg

The back stop all cleaned out ready for teardown

So far we hauldld six thousand two hundred twenty pounds of sand lead and stuff to the dump.

Still have a huge pile of sand to go.

As this is on a basement ita all coming out in buckets.https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20210228/bd47da8e8918692d09222cee986e4c15.jpghttps://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20210228/be1b269be35683cfd98c9b3cd3aaff66.jpghttps://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20210228/17699c3052302ca4c45a93dcc9841cd2.jpg

Surprised somebody didn't want the lead for reloading.

We had a few people mine some of it.

I got a 5 gallon bucket full of range scrap

What's sad is we had a few guys who triedswing by to grab a buckey of pre sorted lead and then take off without doing anything.

They would just say oh I've got a thing and promptly leave. When we said grab a shovel.

I’m surprised that the dump took that sand or maybe it’s not controlled.

My club was in the process of ordering high tech rubber drapes made especially for the use. They will hang in front of the metal backstop, slowing the boolits down. Supposedly, they pass through and the hole closes back up. I was interested in seeing how it worked, but unfortunately, everything got put on hold because of Covid.

So all the lead in that back stop just went in a dump? What a waste.

We have two indoor ranges in our community that use compressed crumb rubber blocks as the back stop. The back wall is lined with 1/4" steel before the large rubber blocks are installed. I don't know if the plate is a high carbon material, such as AR500. The blocks immediately behind the the targets do need to be replaced or rotated. One of the ranges is open to the public and rotates or replaces the damaged blocks about once a year. The public range had a slanted steel bullet catcher behind it for approximately 40 years before the rubber block system was installed.

We have hired a local comapny that is going to rebuild it for us.

They are only charging us for matierals and will donate thier labor.

As soon as they wrap thier current project up they will start on ours.

Goal is to dissasmble. Put steel along the wall. Them reassmble with one more plate on top.

The 40° angle for the strike plate then it will hit th wall and drop to the floor. Wich will be a steel box or sand.

We will still had cardboard over it help and hang tagrgets on.

Will post more photos.

I'm assuming your using AR500 steel, are you using 3/8 or 1/2" on the backstop?

I'm assuming your using AR500 steel, are you using 3/8 or 1/2" on the backstop? Its all 3/8 plate. And none if it is ar steel. We only shoot up to 45 acp no magnuns. 98% of all shooting at this range is 22lr.

Well i did test it with a a AR 15. And a 44mag showing no damage. We are keeping our rules inplace
