New Pedersoli 1861 Springfield arrival

my new Pedersoli 1861 Springfield arrived today. The fit and finish is awesome! question... how do you who have rifles in the white prevent rust? Ive heard of some people putting car wax on them but not sure if thats a good idea.Thanks

On my own '61, I rub it down with 320 grit sandpaper whenever I clean it. That keeps rust away, and very slowly makes it slicker and better looking, eliminating machine marks if I live that long. Originally the troops were supposed to use some leather with pumice powder or something similar to wipe them down at night in camp. Then wipe with a clean cloth and a light coat of oil for storage. I have never seen any rust on my rifle, and I like not having to worry about scratching the bluing like on the Enfields.

I use the 3M green scrubbies on BBL when I clean. BTW get the bore diameter measured. Good fitting minies are the key to accuracy

I beleave back in the day, at least with BROWN BESSE'S they used BRICK DUST!! it works!!

Apply a generous coating of white vinegar and leave it in a nice humid location.

Seriously though, I think that you have more to worry about the underside of the barrel than the exposed surfaces.

Wiping what you can see with an oily rag would probably be sufficient for the exposed areas, with some extra fine steel wool and oil to chase away any blemishes that appear.

I would just wax it. The Brits finally figured out the brick dust was damaging their guns

I have used Tru-Oil stock finish on the bottom of Musket barrels to prevent rust. Take the barrel out of the stock, apply the Tru-Oil, let dry and put back together. The Tru-Oil is about like a clear coat of shellac.

Yup. and shellac does not resist water real well. Wax is more effective.

Many of the firearms in my accumulation are protected with carnauba wax.

Im having good luck with Johnsons paste wax on my blues guns. The ones that see rain etc.

Yup. and shellac does not resist water real well. Wax is more effective.I have seen it debated both ways if "Tru-oil" is 100% water-proof, but it is "water-resistant" in my experience. I know Tru-Oil is not real shellac.
