I got my first deer. I only started hunting deer last year, I'm 60 years old! I've taken squirrels and a few rabbits over the years but after getting back into hand loading and then casting my own boolits I decided to really put some effort into hunting. This year it paid off with a nice sized doe. It was a Lee 200 grain boolit powder coated. 33.5 grains imr 4064 powder from a Marlin 336 which I bought new in the 90's. Shot right side quartering away walking slow up hill about 60 yards and she made it about 30 yards before she fell.
It was good to get my first one but it sure is a lot of work after the shot! Took me all day to get her cut up and in the freezer. I won't forget this day.

way to GOOOOOOO... dont worry about how long it took you to cut up... used to take me all day too, but now I can really sling a knife...hack hack, grind grind, wrap wrap.. all done.. Just like casting your first boolits... at first it goes slow, but once you get used to the motion, you drop hundreds at a shot... just be sure to trim well...

congrats...

Thanks! I tried to get all the fat and silver skin off.
Oh, forgot to say it was a 35 Remington.

It is never too late to get your first deer , I got my some years ago and I was in my mid 30's at the time and now I getting them with cast now and with the help of some on here. Also you did good on the one you got. Meat is meat. That is what I am after also. Happy for you . Also you can use the meat like beef just that lack of the fat. I do not worry about a recipes just for deer. It works for me. Enjoy your work you put in it . May you get many more for the times to follow.

The .35 Remington is a great place to start, not first deer, but my first buck was with an old waffle top Marlin .35.

Now you need to get out next year and do it again, or even this year if you have some season left.

Good morning and Congratulations !!
Well done in all of it !! The first is the best one right through to the last bite !!
35 Remington is a fine place to begin !! I would not feel bad if my last corn cruncher was taken with a 35.

Congrats! Fabulous rifle, great cartridge, proper shot placement ~ with a bullet you made! Well done, indeed. Well, in as much as you asked, ........

My favorite tenderloin recipe. Make a boat from aluminum foil, take the loin and rub it w/ vegetable oil, salt & pepper, add some fresh crushed garlic, and a splash of either bourbon or Worcester sauce. seal up the "boat" and bake at 180 degrees in a pre-heated oven (yes, one hundred eighty) for two hours. Slice it like a loaf of bread and serve. Out of this world good.

Great job! Next time don't worry about how long it takes to get it processed, it tastes better the longer it hangs. I typically try to get mine done a week after I shoot it. If it is above 40 degrees that is a different story.

Good job. Taking that raking shot behind the shoulder and exiting ahead of the off shoulder wastes little meat. Oh, and I look forward to the cutting and wrapping. Maybe because it's only a deer. You can do the whole animal in less time than it takes to cut and wrap one moose quarter. Wife and I would cut a quarter an evening. Lived in Alaska for 28 years. Learned early on to not save the fat on any deer. Rancid.

Awesome on the 1st deer. It takes me a while to cut one up too. Arthritis is my culprit.
