Been busy out in the shop with a real ugly rusted up piece of leaf spring I dug out of a dirt road while walking my dogs. Not sure why I picked it up but the spring had rusted down on one end giving a nice taper and was just asking to be forged into some sort of knife. Well after a little heating, beating, grinding and cursing I ended up with a clip pointed roach bellied skinner with a 5 1/2 inch blade that turned out just under 11 inches over all. It got water quenched and brought back up to a light straw color for anneal and has passed the file test so the steel is plenty hard. Still working on the final edge and making a sheath for it but am happy with it so far. The burner is a Frankenstein build from a few years ago and comes in handy when I need some HEAT.
Hope everybody enjoys the pictures.

Nice work (and I DO mean work) ! !

I made up & use a shorter (3-1/2" blade) Roach Belly for my skinning/caping, and it's very handy.

It takes a bit of work to make a knife. I have a blade from a big industrial wood chipper that's about 10 inches long, 2 wide and about a 1/4 inch thick that keeps talking to me. Nice blade you have there Pietro real pretty, they are fun to make aren't they :)

I made a knife couple years ago from an industrial chipper blade. Had blade for 40yrs. A Ohio Ferro Alloys mill bought green logs to cap their crucibles. Logs were run through chipper that had a self sharpening system. I worked the blade only with files and held blade in my hand if I used grinder. That way didn’t have to worry about ruining temper in blade. Walnut scales held on with 30/30 case heads tapped and threaded. Sheath made from bundle of Farmers Scraps sold at local HWD store.272644

Here's a link to where I got the design for my big burner. https://www.backyardmetalcasting.com/oliverburner1.html

I changed the design of the cone by using a six inch long piece of 3 inch exhaust pipe which I cut and beat into a cone which got welded onto the end of the main tube. The regulator for the propane tank came off of a yard sale weed burner probably from Harbor Freight. I melted the burner head with my first attempt to heat some steel and salvaged the tubing and regulator. The burner is going to end up firing a small forge made out of a dead propane tank if I ever get around to it.

Thank you, and yes, I get a lot of pleasure from working on fixed blade knives - I think I'm up to around 15 or so...…

+1! In the Philippines, they made their big knives out of jeep springs.

Been thinking what to do with some 1/4" thick blades from a zero turn mower. You got the wheels turning. Frank

Thanks, Pietro, you prompted me to make use of a 24" stell cutting blade my son gave me. 1/8" thick, blade is 8" long, red oak scales laminated with purple board.273221

Here is the spring steel knife pretty much finished, sharpened and with a leather sheath. The antler button design is what I've used on all my leather work so far. The copper rivets were made out of upholstery tacks cut down and backed with a brass washer.
