Our middle grandson is 20 years old and has been an avid deer and hog hunter since he killed his first deer, when he was 12.

This deer was killed with his 1980 Remington 700 in .30-06 that I bought new and gave him several years back. This deer was shot at about 50 yards and ran about 20 yards after being shot.

This was actually a very nice sized buck for our part of central Texas but the camera angle and the fact that Mason is 6'8" tall and weighs around 340-350 lbs. makes the deer seem small! I guess that I'm now Treetop Jr...

The load consisted of:

LC 78 NM brass
CCI 200 LRP
30 gr. IMR 4895 powder
NOE SC311-171 with the large HP pin installed
Lyman .30 caliber gas check (annealed)
The alloy was 16:1 from Roto Metal

Given the damage that this combination inflicted to the lungs of this deer, I think my experimenting has paid off. Treetop

Good job, neighbors! Now he needs to get one for everyone else to eat! That one is his. It is neat that you've taught him that he doesn't need the latest whizbang to make meat. Where ( ballpark) are yall in Central Texas?

Good job Mason, nice buck! You need to take Grandpa out hunting with you, I think you both would enjoy that.

Thanks for all of your replies, fellow boolit casters! Texas by God, our ranch is located about half way between College Station and Austin on the far western edge of the Brazos river drainage. Technically it's in the SE portion of central Texas.

Iwsbull, Mason played 10 years of organized football, mostly at right guard. Four years of TIFI football (pre middle school) then 3 years of middle school and 3 years of high school ball, earned a scholarship to an NCAA division II college, then the inevitable happened - he suffered a catastrophic injury to his left knee while lifting weights.

He still loves football and is pursuing a BS in something that I can't even pronounce much less spell but basically it's a type of physical therapy and he hopes to someday sign on with an NFL team as a physical therapist. Treetop
