I closed out this nice sized sow this morning with my Chiappa Ridge Runner in 45/70.

Right after sunup a 300 grain Remington JHP through both shoulders at 2000 fps folded her up nicely.

I almost let her walk holding out for something bigger but at around 110 pounds she’ll cook up nicely.

I never pass up an opportunity to kill a sow. They’re piglet factories.

She’ll make good table fare at 110lbs.

The Chiappa Ridge Runner (to me) is a pretty spectacular version of the Winchester Model 1886.

It’s a “Takedown” version of the Winchester Model 1886 with a Matte Black finish on the metal, a Rubberized/weatherized stock, 18.5” half round half octagon barrel and forward mounted scope rail that has skinner aperture rear sight and fiber optic front sight.

It’s the perfect levergun for those that want an 1886 to hunt with but have reservations about taking their high end Uberti/Winchester’s into the field reference fear of damage from the terrain/weather.

The barrel is threaded for a muzzle brake (which is included with the gun) but I run it with just a thread protector (as pictured above) when not shooting suppressed.

For those not familiar with the 1886 (or have never handled one) it is a beefy levergun that has significant heft as compared to the Marlin 1895 Guide Gun but in this configuration (to me) it’s weight distribution is perfect.

I came into this one quite by accident in that my local gun shop received 8 of them, 4 stainless and 4 matte black, that were all T&E guns that had been sent to gun writers, YouTubers with gun channels and various testing concerns.

My LGS was selling them $799 for the matte black and $899 for the stainless and being stingy (and realizing they retail for near $1500) I snatched this one up.

It has been flawless in fit, firing and function in the few years I’ve owned it and it is my “go to” gun for all my short range, mid to large game hunting needs accounting for several pigs and a single coyote.

It is accurate with my handloads (never fired factory any 45/70’s cuz I can’t afford them) and it’s trigger pull is exceptional.

Gratuitous pics of the Ridge Runner:

Late to tthe thread, but nice work.
I share your sentiments regarding factory fodder, though I have a couple of boxes received as well intended but pricey gifts.
Beyond the economics of cast bullets, there remains a special satisfaction with success with slugs and ammo you produced yourself.
Congratulations.. well done.
Nice gun plug as well

Wow a gun writers gun!
Has the best trigger..
Shoots exceptional.
And flawlessly never misses.
I bet every time you take it out things just jump in front of it wanting to be shot.
You are a very lucky man to own one.
Wish I could find me one of those.
