Hi,
I just won a 1-24” twist Gibbs rifle and understand this twist won’t stabilize the longer boolit.

Anyone have any idea what kind of a boolit I would Best Buy a mold for?

Thanks in advance,
Calvin

I have a 45 caliber Gibbs and Pedersoli makes a 520 grain bullet mold for it so I imagine they make one for the 40 caliber model also. If it is on their website give VTI Gun Parts a call as they carry most Pedersoli parts.

.

The Pedersoli website recommends the following load data for their .40 Gibbs:

52gr BP, to a max of 80gr, under a 316 grain .40cal Minie' boolit

Thanks guys. These won't stabilize the long slugs like the later 1-16" twist is what I heard. What I was wondering is if anyone has any experience with this slower twist model and in .40 caliber.

If it were me I'd go to the bullet swap section and ask for samples of different soft cast bullets from say 300 to 400 grains in as many different types as I could get and then try them before buying a mould. It should answer a lot of questions and possibly save you some money by not buying a mould that wouldn't make you happy.

Just my $0.02 worth.

Here is a website that allows you to estimate the proper bullet length for twist rate. http://www.tmtpages.com/twistrate.htm
At least it will get you in the ball park length wise so you know what to look for.
I was an RO at the world shoot in LR in 2015 and there was a Spanish shooter with one of the slow twist Gibbs' 40s and he really struggled beyond 300yd because of too heavy a bullet.

FWIW, one of my reads was that the 1:24" .40 is basically a 100yd gun; the 1:16" good to 600yds.

If you see one of the old Ideal adjustable length .44 core molds up for sale, they cast at a very good diameter for paper patching to fit .40 bores. Mine drops out at .390" diameter.

Haven't done it yet but that adjustable plug is going to be changed to a rounded or SWC nose or else get a replacement.

Thanks everyone. You've sure been helpful. Now, I have to do some figuring on which design is likely to work for me and see if I can get Accurate to make one.

Just another path...
This is a .375 round ball mold modified for adjustable length .40 bore paper patched.
There's base plugs for hollow and flat bases.

Calvin,
What diameter are you looking for? I might have several here that we can try out.

I won't be sure until I get the gun to check for diameter but somewhere between. 390 and .400, depending on whether you paper patch or not but it should be between. 849 and .900 in length, according to calculations and how fast I can push it for safety and best accuracy. You coming to coffee tomorrow?

Once you get it, let me know, and we'll see if I have anything that will work.
Unfortunately, I have to go to New Plymouth tomorrow morning, so I won't make it to coffee.

You might order a few bullets from Buffalo Arms Co... 300 grains or so should be a good enough place to start. My 1 in 16 rifle loves them .395 with a full wrap of 9# 25% cotton paper and then run through a .400 sizer. So far I’m playing with 60 grains of 3f Swiss, a .45 felt wad and various bullet combinations. What a fun rifle to shoot!

Forgot to say that Amazon has pin gauges for a,couple buck a piece. It’ll help you get off on the right foot...

Where does a guy pick up a mold like that?

Accurate Molds can make you one!

BTW, I wanted to bid on that rifle. Glad it’s gone to a good home!

Glad you weren’t bidding and thanks. Glad to have gotten my itch scratched. I have the Pedersoli mould coming, a friend loaned me a 300 grain RCBS and another a whole pile of pistol boolits.

I haven’t had time to shoot the pistol boolits but the RCBS 300 gr. shows promise.

Would have bid but I found something else that I had to have!

Should be a dandy deer rifle as well as the target shooting. You got a good deal!
