Can you shoot 3006 without gas checks? I've never shot cast boolits in a rifle and was wondering if I could save the $$$ gas checks would cost.

Of course you can. Use a plain base mold and shoot away. At a guess you would essentially be turning the 30-06 into a functional 30-30. By that I mean loading it to shoot at 30-30 velocities.

I shoot both .22 and 6mm bullets that are from gas check molds (RCBS)without the gas check and can't tell any difference from those with gas checks.

Thanks for the info. I was thinking about 150 or 170 grain for plinking. At what point do I need gas checks?

At about 1500 you will probably need them

Size them .301 and patch them back up. Load like jacketed and go shooting!

Depends a lot on your alloy, boolit fit, etc.,etc.
I run some to about 1800 with no prblems and others say they get more.
The more you experiment, the more you get to shoot. :-D

Greetings The experimenting part is the best. Just start out around 1600 fps without GC and move up about 100 fps with 3 cartriges.. It depends on your barrel.. lube.. powder.. mix.. bullet style.. and how you squint through your shooting eye. Water dropped linetype can get moving fast... 40-1 lead can plod along rather respecfully. But every barrel is PEEEE-QUUUU-LIAR so remember not to try to interchange Max loads without GC from one 30 cal to another. I did once !

So what happened? Did you get to see the silver stream from a different perspective? :-)
