View Full Version : Trying to make a Maxi cast smaller

I just traded for a stainless Encore barrel, planning to retire my blued barrel because of the crap weather I hunt in. These barrels are both 50 caliber.

My maxi balls that went down the barrel nicely in the blue barrel don't fit in the stainless one.

Any ideas on how to get smaller Maxi balls?

Just a thought here, but I had a Lee mould once that cast real big, so I used some of that Frankfurt Arsenal mould drop out release stuff and put 4 or 5 coats on (let dry in between) and it made the cast about .003 less in size. It seemed to stay on well, may want to try it.

That is a great thought, I have a couple cans of the stuff and hate it, but it might work here.

Is the difference small enough to size it in a Lee type sizer?

The problem is Maxi Balls are tapered, so a push through sizer won't work.

I don't much like the stuff either, I bought some when I bought my first couple moulds (before I knew about this place) cause I thought I needed it. Other than "cheating down" the size of a mould I do find it useful for hollow point pins. Short of that it's pretty useless IMO.

How did the maxi's shoot in the blued one?

Maybe try a C501-440-RF for the .500 S&W? Anyone use that in a .50? Still might have to size it for a tight bore encore barrel.

They shoot fine in the blued barrel.

These s&w lee bullets drop about .503 in pure lead with my mold, so sizing is still needed with tight bores. I also size my maxis with a .501 lee die just for easier loading.

I paper patch the C501-440-RF. My mould throws them out at .500 to .501 with lead that is between 6 to 8 BHN. They also weigh 460 grains with the pure lead. I wrap them then size them dry with the paper on one more time. I am getting great groups with those bullets and my son shot his first ML deer with it this year. Ron
