I have a confession, Im 50 years old and have never owned a center fire levergun. To remedy this I am building a Marlin 336 in 38-55. Back before the price on guns went throught the roof I bought a pre safety Marlin in 30-30.

I put it aside for a while due to the complexity of cutting the chamber. I recently picked it back up. I have a larger diameter than normal barrel so I am having to make some hardware for it.

Above I am milling a clamp for the barrel and magazine I will eventually split this and screw it together to provide clamping pressure.

Here you see it on the barrel before profiling

Partially profiled

Let me know if anyone wants to see more. I am having trouble coming up with a clamp for the forearm. the original doesnt fit. I dont have much experience with sheet metal fab

While you're at it, make it a take down.

I installed a picatinny rail on the receiver and barrel. I will have a long eye relief scope mounted.

I also made a handguard band, It will be parkerized like the rest of the gun when its finished. Dont laugh im not that good at sheet metal fab.

I may change it out

I tig welded a small block to the barrel and bent a piece of metal around the front of the forend and the screwed the sheet metal band to the block

I powder coated the rail on top to match the parkerized finish

A word of caution on welding barrels, all welds shrink and can cause a tight spot in the bore. Also 4140 can become very brittle next to a weld. I do weld on old barrels, usually taking them back to their original length. These barrels get a liner after welding.

The inside looks ok, I will push a soft lead slug down it to test
